RB28 - The True Diplomat

If we take alphabet, then the only thing we'd be able to trade for IW is alphabet itself. However grabbing alphabet would be useful if we meet another Civ or two and can trade Alphabet around to get us all the techs we've ignored so far.

Sorry if a lot of what I said was obvious, I think I'd wait for the other people on the team to give their views on it.

Lets play some of the turns, and decide what to take when we get closer to the point. Obviously IW so soon wont be as important if we meet another civ or 2.

3070BC-2500BC

Ok, in light of what further scouting has revealed, I reiterate my plea to take CoL instead of IW off of the oracle.

Highlights:

2740BC: england builds a city to our SW

2650BC: AHusb completed, reveals horses in our capital BFC and to our W, start on the wheel for chariot defenses

2590BC: Warrior killed by wounded barb archer

Further scouting reveals one respectable city to our N and one moderate city to our NE that do not require IW.

I would advocate us to build in these locations (2nd one is debatable, but 1st one is a good 2nd city imo gets two food resources in LFC--no obelisk required!) and just chop out the oracle. Once we trade for IW then we can have the marble city (lots of forests) for chopping the GL and using it for at least temporary gpfarm (has pigs + rice + farms). This city will be next-to-useless prior to IW and to hook up the marble we would need:

1) obelisk
2) wait for border pop
3) 8 turns for quarry + turns to hook it up

in the meantime, we could've just chopped the oracle out imo.

couple pics:

How do you take a screenshot I forgot

Hit PrintScreen and it'll appear in your Civ 4 screenshots folder....usually.

liz and roosey are pretty easy to get along with, so so far so good. of course they're both a threat to launch...

Futurehermit, I did not see the save in your post :scan:

Futurehermits city one looks decent, but city 2 definately is not. I noticed Liz already has a jungle city encrouching, we need to establish the jungle and get out 15% land before getting cramped in, we can come back and found coastal cities later. 1NW of the northern gems looks decent for city 2's spot, we can probably take some tiles from liz's city.

Chopping oracle looks a better option now since we found a good second city spot, but I would still favor IW with Oracle unless we meet more civ's, in which case I think alphabet would be a decent choice.

Darkwatcher is up for 20 turns, priorities are probably getting those horses hooked up, settling city 2 and going Bronze Working after Wheel.

Why can't we just get IW from roosey or liz??? A civ only needs to know 2 civs to trade, right?

I don't see us needing to rush into the jungle spots frankly. That city is about as far east as I imagine Liz will build in the short term. I would say we have time to settle north of liz and to our S and E. Of course we can't wait forever, but I am 100% convinced that we can surely wait to trade for IW before settling in the jungle. If we need IW that fast I would rather see us take something good off oracle and then self-research IW. Anyways, that's the last I'll say on it because I'm just beating a dead horse.

Well if we don't want to settle our south western land ASAP (risky to assume AI won't settle it), then taking something other than IW would be wise. CoL is the obvious thing to take, where are we in regards ot taking Monarchy?

With Lizzy taking the superb spot to the SW, I'm a little concerned that the land we grab might not be of high enough quality to keep up in tech etc. But we'll see how it pans out

Her capital is a ways to the West. In my experience the AI settles one close to you and then the rest near their capital. Of course we can't wait LONG to settle the jungle belt or the AI WILL eventually settle it. But I believe we can settle the city to the north, chop the oracle for CoL, self-research alpha and then trade for IW around the time that we want to settle to the south to get the marble for the GL. I believe we could settle a city to the north of Liz's city as well for a 3rd city. It's not amazing, but it's decent and only has a few jungle patches.

Qwack
Futurehermit
Darkwatcher
Dantski (replacing Compromise)
Sunrise

Thats the roster guys. Darkwatcher your currently up for 20 turns. Lets start playing some more turnsets...

Sorry I'm gong to need a skip as I'm extremly busy today and tomorrow

Alright got it and playing now

Hook Horses up

Finish research on Wheel, head to Bronze Working (19 turns).

Our lone warrior heads to Atlas’ suggested spot 1 NW of Gems, it can work a 2F 1H tile immediately so I think that’s the best spot right now.

After the settler is done, I’d like a couple of Chariots built for security. An English Archer is sniffing around our territory and defending 2 cities with one warrior doesn’t seem a good idea.

Bombay founded, considering it will take a long time to grow and most of its tiles are covered by jungle at present,I start a worker there.

Next turn the English found a city immediately west of Bombay, it seems Lizzy I staking her claim for the jungle early and could cut us off very quickly if we don’t get the southern spot soon. Close borders tensions are inevitable.

Judaism FIADL in 1960 BC, neither Liz or Roosie grabs it.

On the final turn a Barb city is founded to the east of our southern future city, its on the coast and isn’t that bad a location. It doesn’t really fit in with our future city plans though and wastes a Fish resource.

Pretty uneventful turnset. Since Liz has 2 cities right on Bombay’s border, this definitely makes me think CoL is the way to go if we get Oracle since Bombay will likely (certainly?) be the holy city. A clear path of Priesthood then Writing on the tech front. What we should build right now, we don’t have anything important to do with workers right now except chop forests. Whether we want to get another Settler out quickly depends on whether we want Confucianism in Bombay or not. I’ll let the team discuss that. Currently we have 1 warrior and 1 Chariot militarily with another Chariot in a few turns, Bronze working will be finished soon as well.

I don't understand that city placement...

I seem to be the odd man out in this group, maybe it is best if I bow out of this SG? What I mean is that everyone seems to be agreeing on a general strategy and I really disagree with the sentiments thusfar (e.g., taking IW off oracle, 2nd city placement, etc.).

:)

edit: I should still post some productive comments though :) IW will be very important for the 2nd city with all the jungle. Health will also likely be an issue. If we lose the farmable (wheat/corn?) to Liz's culture then it's basically a junk city imo :) The northern city I envisioned using as a pretty hardcore early whipping factory with those 2 food resources immediately workable...

hmm? I personally don't agree with the second city here either. I thought the corn/pigs city was a good spot, and then taking that spot with City #3. Either way, Its not horrible because Elizabeth has got another city around the area and atleast we secure a strong spot with that city. Anyways, I would probably start obilesk in Bombay and whip it once we are at size 2(Cancel the fast worker for now, he will have nothing to do), getting that corn into the radius will be important. We should also get Priesthood and start chopping oracle in Delhi.

Sunrise is up for 20 turns.

If we get CoL and holy city in 2nd city we shouldn't lose the farmable, which is good. But then we will need to beeline pretty hard for alpha to trade for IW.
