RBD9 SG - Five Russian Cities

Good turns all around :goodjob:

Sirian, your descriptions were really quite clear enough to follow. The saves came at a time beyond feast into 'buried', but I really do like the blow-by-blow descriptions. What the game really needs (well, from an SG standpoint) is a replay feature. Enable it to 'record' and be able to disable it to stop monstrous save-file bloat, but if there was a 'replay' mode I would have loved to watch that, as well as several other turns in games like the recent rbd5 Persian homeland mountain invasion :hammer:

I like embassies, but it's a "if cash permits" deal, not an absolute. In recent turns the emphasis was very much not on diplomacy. Losing a city due to lack of money for troop upgrades and having an embassy in Mao-land wouldn't cut it :P At this point though, I would agree, get those embassies in place while not throwing away interest.

Mil Tradition and Replaceable Parts?! HA! Come get come immortals!!! :hammer:

Charis

Sirian, I tend to agree on the research issue. The only time it's worth going even 10% is when there is a tech you know you will want eventually but there is nothing urgent down that path you might need to buy anytime soon. Radio is a good example.

Of course, if you can get your city(ies) to size 21 then you can run a scientist and not waste any shields/trade. Then you can run science on the above basis gratis.

0) 1200AD Cancelled existing incense deals with Zulu and China. Traded Incense+100g to Zulus for Replaceable Parts, and Incense to China for Refining+60g.

Woot! We have rubber! No oil, though.

2) 1220AD Chinese and English embassies established. China is building cavalry, England building knights.

How on Earth did London build the ToE at 12 shields per turn?

3) 1230AD Indian and Aztec embassies. Indians building cavalry, Aztecs a bank (and are in anarchy).

5) 1250AD Coal deal renewed.

7) 1260AD China has Atomic Theory.

10) 1275AD WM+720g to India for Atomic Theory.

I've put Charistroika on Intelligence Agency as placeholder for Hoover. Do we want to build Hoover? I think so, more to deny the AI Civs than because it's that useful to us.

In order to use IA as placeholder, we need to buy Electronics in under 7 turns. I'm hoping China went on to it right after Atomic Theory, and will be able to finish in time.

If you all think this is :smoke: , cancel the IA in Charis-town. It's only 1 turn in, so we're not committed yet. I don't think we want to build the IA for real -- it'll be too useful as placeholder for SS parts later.

Do the AI Civs bother building UN if diplo victory is disabled? If not, that would make a very nice placeholder.

I know from expierence.

If you disabled diplomatic, you can't build the UN.
I learned this during one of my games...
that had diplo disabled.

LK's right. UN is off the table.

We could build Manhatten and use nukes for placeholders. IF we have the materials to build nukes anyway, heh. We're going to need a TON of aluminum for space ship parts, and it don't show on plains any more. Better hope we have some in the hills, or that somebody will be kind and offer us a continuous supply.

Turn one, I bought steel by selling atomic theory to the zulus (at last civ) and got combustion for 250 or so from Gandhi. Those were the only techs out there my turn, except for flight, which I'd reccomend getting once the price goes down.

The Hoover gambit didn't pay off, but it's a good idea. I switched to a colosseum when the IA was about to blow, wasting a scandalous amount of shields. I started it again, and it's likely to work this time. If not this time, then the next!

Our workers have almost completed their rounds for the game, except for pollution control.

Aside from that... nothing! The X man is pissed, but what else is new?

Will get it tonight. (I hope!)

Research: Hoover's 3 turns away and in the bag, no-one else even started it until 1360 or so. We had to buy Electronics at 5th civ from Shaka for 900 gold + incense (which made him polite) instead of 7th (last) civ since Lizzy and Monty are too broke to buy anything. We gave it to them gratis since they couldn't even afford 6th civ prices, which made them gracious. I held off on buying Mass Production and Flight since there didn't seem to be much point in getting them yet & I didn't want to invalidate our Colossus.

Around the world, wars come and wars go... Persia signed peace treaties with England and someone else, but got into a new war with Zululand and is still at war with India. It's all phony as far as I can tell, though there may be bombardment going on somewhere. Most everyone is communist except Persia's a Monarchy and at last report Zulus were a Democracy.

Closer to home, our infrastructure projects are nearing completion. Most of our cities' tiles are now fully improved and set to high food for quick growth to size 20. I think the only thing left to do for the nonce besides fight pollution is get those mountains around Charistroika fully improved. Zedropolis built Infantry pretty steadily during my turn but has now got 80 shields after corruption so I swapped to building an arty every turn; we should be able to do that for the next while. Tamaringrad got a cathedral, a courthouse, and a harbour; Cyrilla got a cathedral, a courthouse, and a start on a copshop, and Jestograd got a cathedral, a colliseum, and will be done a copshop right away. Don't veto those copshops, they ought to pay for themselves right away since those are the furthest cities from our new capital.

1375 AD (0) - We're still alive, yay! :P
More than that, looking better and better on infrastructure, and on ability
to mount a defence if attacked. And wow, we 'could' research Mass Production
on our own in just 4 turns. (Double cost of buying, so no tnx, but good to know)

1385 AD (2) - Aztecs have enough of current deal, so we lose saltpeter (got what
we needed). Give them Incense and about 400 gold for Mass Production. (He is
now gracious)

1390 AD (3) - Good news. Bad news. Good news. All in Charistroika!

Hoover Dam is completed in CStown! :hammer:

The source of iron there is depleted!

A new source of iron has been found, on adjacent hill, already connected.
(Phew.) We sell off the outdated coal plants.

1395 AD (4) - Aztecs and India sign up to whomp on Persia.
Persians want an alliance vs our gracious friends and an RoP????

Har!!! :rotfl:
Have a territory map instead there, X-boy!

What's that? You want to cancel our silks and dyes for your incense?
Can we talk about that? What if I throw in 6 gpt (so you don't invade my
butt?) Yes? Excellent. Thanks!

1400 AD (5) - Starts Intel Agency in CStroika. Veto if you like. Can use the
harder-to-build Battlefield Medicine (Which we have zero use for) as a
placeholder.

Persian and India come to peace treaty. England and India decide
to pick on China.

1410 AD (7) - No wait, India is at war with Persia again! :P Yes, come on
drag that puppy out of democracy!

England and India go MPP, so England is at war with Persians.
(Woo!! They might ALL get sucked out of Democracy)

1420 AD (9) - China and India come to peace again. Indians want an MPP and
RoP. Ha!!!

1425 AD (10) - All is well that ends well...

If you do NOT want the CIA, cancel it this turn!! It's due in CStroika
next turn.

Good luck,
Charis

Umm, Charis, did you check to see if any were in Democracy to begin with? They were all in Communism on my turn... :)

Do we want 2 placeholders for spaceship parts? Might be slightly useful, but not overly so; we will probably be tech-limited rather than production-limited. What would we use the CIA for, other than getting an idea of how many of what units the AIs have? I'm kind of ambivalent on the issue.

I did in fact check and all but one (Persia?) were in democracy, so all communism is great news! :hammer:

CIA for space race? It has many excellent uses, as it's needed for espionage missions.

Steal Tech - If you're two techs behind at the end and no cash to buy, this is how you catch up

Sabotage Production - Someone with a production advantage going to beat you on that last space part? Here's a fix (I think I had to use this in one space race, at the VERY end)

The CIA takes about 5 turns to build and 6 for Battlefield med, so it's not a huge placeholder.

Looking better and better... er just one thing...
If we have no aluminum and/or uranium we'll NEED to trade for them, so be nice up til then.

Charis

A quiet turn. Ours are apparently a messy people, as we pollute a lot.

I traded for Flight, Motorized Transport and Oil, so I’ve been building Bombers and Tanks. I would like more Infantry, but felt the oil-burners were even more of a necessity. The tanks are for counter-strikes against seaborne invasions, the bombers are to wipe out Persian rail near our border and to crush his two border cities. X-man is building bombers too, so we’ll need fighters, lest he wipe out OUR rail and crush OUR border cities 8-0. Of course a navy would be nice, too, but “I only got 5 hands” 8-).

Speaking of Seaborne Invasions, as time permitted on pollution clean-up, I’ve been building military rail spurs. This project has just completed, as there is now no square in our territory we cannot attack from a rail square.

The entire other continent is at war.

All the AI’s but the Xman (who apparently has anger-management problems) are either “Polite” or “Gracious”.

Radio just came in to the first AI civ (India), so it is time to start thinking about pre-building again.

Good luck.

Summary: Um... built some units.

Mao is getting munched on, he's in really bad shape. He gave us all he had (not much) in 1520AD for... Horses.

I renewed deals that came due.

We had no fighters when I started so... I built a "few". (Come get some, Eggsy Baby).

Some ships got built, no idea who ordered that. :satan: Our oil runs out next turn, so I have bombers on queue after the last round of fighter construction, believing that we'll slip them in on that last batch of oil before it expires, and also B ships being built in the port cities.

I planted forests in the dead zone above Cyrilla. Built rails elsewhere while we still have coal. When it runs out this time, I don't think we ought to renew, so any more rails would have to come first. No more are needed... but our workers need jobs! Certainly if it doesn't happen before then, my next administration plans an Arbor Campaign Across Russia! "Plant a Tree, Plant a Tree, Plant a Tree for all the World to see!"

Um... did I mention that I built a few units?

0) 1525AD 9582 gold? That's, wow, more gold than I've ever had in Civ3 before!

Hey, X-man, what would you offer me for all this gold? Saltpeter and a map? No, I think we'll just keep it all to ourselves, then :)

Hmmm, so far only India and Zulus have Radio.

1) 1530AD Our workers dig some mines, and start starving out the tax collectors. Hah! (Not that I've got anything against tax collectors, no, why would you think that?)

2) 1535AD China and Zulus make peace.

3) 1540AD We finish building some bombers and a battleship. Charistroika starts building Battlefield Medicine without consulting me! Grrrr. I cancel their next delivery of cookies.

4) 1545AD Everybody except the English has Radio. We buy it off Gandhi for 720g.

We advance into the modern age, and learn about Rocketry. Hmmm. No aluminium

We start actual scientific research! Space Flight in 15.

Our workers stand around aimlessly waiting for the next pollution outbreak.

5) 1550AD Over on the other continent, China is being gobbled up by India, England, and the Aztecs.

9) 1570AD India wants an alliance vs Persia. Sorry Gandhi, much as we'd like to destroy X-man ( :hammer: :hammer: :hammer: ), I don't think now is the time.

10) 1575AD We're 10 turns from Space Flight and could start prebuild for Apollo soon. Aluminium is available from India when we need it.

Jester up, Zed on deck.
