RBTS5 - Multiple Personality Disorder

I burn Shimo and whip a forge, I get 1-2 losses to the rebellious axeman, but I am really not keeping that city.;)

1455 AD

I advance on the next japanese cities and order trade posts in our remaining cities. Having a multiple personality really does wonders to the builder in me.

1460 AD

Both Yokohama and Nagasaki are on hills. Bad.

1465 AD

Yokohama is taken with not too high losses, though 2 suicide cats are used.

1470 AD

Happiness is becoming a real issue, I fear we have to pause after Nagasaki. I dial up culture production one notch.

1475 AD

I loose three! troopers to seriously bad luck rolls before Nagasaki trying for two easy kills against two axeman watching a settler..

1480 AD

I begin bombardement, though only 3 defenders watch Nagasaki my army is serious understrength as well. I also start Maoi Statues west of our capital. Please finish those, Swiss Pauli, I couldn´t think of any better city.

1485 AD

A great Artist is born, no idea what we can use him apart from another GA.

1490 AD

Nothing special.

1495 AD

A nasty stack is inside Nagasaki, we can gamble on a stupid AI move so that he moves his troops outside, but I think we should make peace. Especially our economy is hurting and Toku would actually throw a city in the deal (if it is the island southwest of Yokohama, I would say yes.

I've gone back and fixed all the pictures in this thread, which of course went down in CivFanatics' server hacking last week. If you're just coming across this thread for the first time, now is a good chance to catch up on some of the action that you missed. :D Here's a list of our civ swaps so far:

Pacal of the Spanish (Expansive/Financial)
Peter of the Zulus (Expansive/Philosophical)
Ramesses of Portugal (Industrious/Spiritual)
Frederick of the Khmer (Organized/Philosophical)
Wang Kon of the Romans (Fiancial/Protective)
Huayna Capac of the Vikings (Financial/Industrious)

I'll also use this post as a bump for Swiss Pauli's turns. :)

Got it for the weekend. I think I'll save the Artist until after the change to see whether the number of GMen required for a GA is also reset :groucho:

So... how are things going? We're approaching three days since Archduke played his 10 turns. Please give us an update on your situation, Swiss Pauli, because I'd rather not issue a skip.

We've had some pretty good discussions in this thread, but the last couple days have been very quiet.

I played my turns yesterday morning, but couldn't report for the same reason mentioned in the SGOTM, but it'll be up this morning.

Being the 'laterne rouge' in this game is now quite a stressful micro-frenzy (I'm sure darrelljs would love it ). I can't say I was very happy with many things I inherited: lots of workers were doing pointless tasks...

...when ex-Japan needs a lot of improvement. We were also reseaching Economics, although the GM has gone and only two AIs are available for trade:

Given our variant, I had no choice but to finish Economics. Ideally, I'd have gone for Rep Parts, but I couldn't guarantee to complete in the 10 turns available (I played 11 in total to get back to an even number), as we needed cash to fund deficit research, so I plumped for Guns (5 turns) then stockpiled cash.

Some of our cities were also doing odd things: Kwadukuza - with two settled MIs - was building a Uni, whereas the Academy city of Barcelona was training a catapult, having recently been whipped, and it had neither a Forge, nor a Theatre, and was at its happy cap :smoke:

Looking at the war, we're totally gassed: running 20% culture, 20% science and the rest taxes to break even  Facing a Drill1, CG3 LB on a hill with a couple of Maces and some Praets is no fun, so I took peace for Sapporo & his Map. Sadly Sapporo wasn't on the island; it's next to his capital. And it didn't managed to get a granary in time, though borders have popped and it's working its fish.

The rest of the set was spent trading with the AIs and improving cities, and trying to complete builds 1 turn before the handover. This led to some odd, short term assignments:

And there's plenty more like that: seeing as beakers will be reset, we're running merchants aplenty in Academy cities, so this micro will need reversing once Sullla makes the switch.

Our Foreign Ministry was abuzz with activity: Pete came to ask help in his war with Shaka. I hadn't got the message that Zulu had declared war (will this :smoke: ever be fixed?) but I declined anyway. Shaka would steamroll through the cities Peter placed on the Zulu home landmass. This is good for us as Pete needs his wings clipping - after some trading, we can see he has Sci Meth - and he has lost some really good cities (as well as a couple of turkeys).

Speaking of trades, I sold CoL to Shaka for cash and map, Guilds to the horseless Rameses for gold, Nat to Pete for most of PP, and Economics and Guns to Pete for Astro. I turned down Pete's request for free Economics, Ramy's request for us to go Org Rel, and Shaka's request for us to attack Peter. Traded sugar to Zulu for Gold, and corn to Peter for Wines.

From here, I'd recommend spending our war chest on Rep Parts & Rifling, then :hammer: Japan and get to working on dismantling the Egyptian empire. That will set us up for a showdown with Shaka, which is always fun!

I've also been wondering how I missed TheArchduke's report on Thursday, and I now think he edited one of his previous posts (IIRC it was to do with razing a city) into his turnset report. This is not a sensible thing to do because an edit doesn't count as new activity, so I did not check the thread until after Sullla's post on Friday.

OK, way to get us back on track. Managing that last turnset is always a little weird, and it sounds like it was nicely played. I plan to play my 10 turns later today. :)

We'll be swapping the roster around again to rotate that final turnset. Here's the new look:

I'll also echo Swiss Pauli's point that it's usually not a good idea to edit posts with turnsets rather than posting new ones. I check this thread about twice a day on average, but I know many individuals use email notification for new posts, which editing won't pick up on. In any case, no big deal however.

lurker's comment: I've been lurking for awhile and this is a very interesting varient. But how exactly do you change your civ + leader via worldbuilder?

I learned this lesson playing with the DM crew. For a group that's supposed to be the most low-key out there, they can bite pretty hard when they want to

Swiss seems to have survived his micro-fest well, and with Sullla up next and the civ change, long-term plans are tough. So I guess my contribution to the discussion is to say I'm glad the game is in good hands :)

Its only Greyfox that you have to look out for ... and I am pretty sure that he is just living up to the reputation that we have given him :D.

Sulla's Epic 17 shadow report

Tried searching for it, but no luck. Link Please?

I think i understand how you do it though.

You Save the game Via Worldbuilder, then you open up the text document and edit it.

but where is the Text document's for the worldbuilder saves?

Nice to see that this thread has picked back up again. :)

(0) 1550AD Well, I don't have a whole lot to say about the inherited turn. Swiss Pauli looks to have everything running very nicely; we've accumulated a massive bankroll of over 2000g while waiting out the last couple turns, which I'll burn as soon as we make the swapover. I also heartily approve the decision to build the Heroic Epic in kwaDuzka; even if it's not the absolute perfect location, better to get some more soldiers going now than wait any longer. I'd also like to whip some more universities to get Oxford going in our top science city (probably Madrid or Kyoto, have to check after the swap to see which one). I also want to continue spreading Christianity for our shrine, try to figure out the location for Globe Theatre, and try to figure out which victory condition to pursue. I'm sure we could pack this in and cruise to Space... but I'm not sure how interesting that would prove to be.

Time to roll the dice and figure out our next civ and leader. For the new civ, we land... Germany. Ugh. :undecide: Talk about totally useless! We're still nowhere close to either Assembly Plants or Panzers on the tech tree. Just goes to show that for all that we've had some lucky picks (such as Rome for Praetorians) we've also had some complete duds. Now for the leader... we roll Napoleon (Charismatic/Organized). While I wouldn't say that those are perfect traits for our situation, we could have done a lot worse. The later we get in the game, the more Organized will help us out, after all.

As always, I have to go through massive reconfiguration of our cities after the swap. Set all cities to max food to replenish those granaries, pick new infrastructure and unit builds, etc. It's not a good time to build soldiers right now (a much better thing to do will be revolt into Nationhood civic and draft some rifles once we have the tech), so I don't, except in our Heroic Epic city. Despite our huge size, we're in a shockingly bad way in terms of luxuries - only a measly THREE such resources! We'll be able to pick up gold and furs from conquering Tokugawa, but that's still not really enough. I go ahead and trade for gems with Shaka, sending him excess copper and horses in return (he already has sources of both - huh? ) That will help us out significantly for the time being.

Here's the new look of our civilization:

(1) 1555AD Suryavarman wants to trade us spices for rice. Sounds like a deal! Incidentally, the Great Person golden age counter DOES reset after the civ swap. In other words, we can trigger a Golden Age just with our single Great Artist sitting in Madrid. I think that we should definitely do so - just in a couple of turns, since so many cities are working max food right now. Then we can use our 15 turn Golden Age to swap briefly to Nationhood and draft rifles, for another powerful offensive against Japan!

We should also think about what economic civic to run. I think that Mercantilism would probably be better for our situation (since we're in Representation, plus many of the largest civs out there are also in Mercantilism at the moment), but need to wait for the Golden Age to arrive to experiment with which would be best.

(2) 1560AD This unit should come in handy during our next war:

As a Charismatic civ, I actually had enough XP to get the uber Medic III/Woodsman III combo, only to find that Recon units can't take the Woodsman III promotion. D'oh! :crazyeye: Well, that's still a pretty nice healer anyway.

(3) 1565AD Sell Education @4th to Suryavarman for Divine Right and 50g in change. Although the odds of us getting anything from Divine Right are next to nil, I can't resist picking up a tech at basically no cost to us by trading with a backwards civ.

(4) 1570AD Espionage reveals that Ramesses will discover Banking next turn, so this is the ideal time to sell it to him for his 90g. He actually pops up requesting this deal himself, saving me the minimal effort it would take to click on his name - ha!

Peter pops up requesting we go to war with Shaka, and of course I decline. Our relations have been so crazily fickle in this game; best friends with Peter before one of the swaps, now we're down at the low end of Cautious. Heh. I'll also note here that I've decided to have Rome (the very strong eastern city on South Island) start cranking out a navy for us. We're going to need it eventually to do any kind of conquering overseas, so might as well get started with some Galleons while we have the time.

(5) 1575AD By the way, speaking of awesome coastal cities...

Take a look at Oporto! The double-lighthouse + Moai Statues combo has this city rocking a crazy mixture of food, commerce, and shields. If we ever draw the Dutch and their overpowered unique building, this game is OVER!

(6) 1580AD Discover Replaceable Parts, start work on Rifling (7 turns). We've got just enough of a bankroll to make it there at 100% science, and then the fun will start.

(7) 1585AD Now that our cities have remaxed their food boxes, and I've got them assigned to their "normal" tiles, I feel it's time to trigger our Golden Age. Burn our Great Artist and start the fun! Rifling ETA drops from 6 turns to 4. I pull the swap to Mercantilism, and our science goes up from ~860 to 950 beakers/turn. Seems like the right move!

Of course, I have to go through all our cities and beat the AI governors over the head, firing about a million spy specialists...

(9) 1595AD Darius demands Replaceable Parts, which is a monopoly tech on the way to Rifling. I'll say this one time, Darius: N-O. Otherwise, pretty uneventful.

(10) 1600AD And that closes out a very quiet turnset. Nice to get some easy ones in for a change.

Next turn we discover Rifling, and will also be 5 turns from our last civics swap, so we can pop into Nationhood and start drafting. We may want to spend those 5 turns in Theocracy as well, for a little extra XP. I'd probably go for Chemistry as our next tech, but Constitution/Democracy is another decent possibility. If we get a Great Engineer out of Madrid for our next Great Person, I'd hold it for use on the Statue of Liberty (now THAT would be sweet on our very large continent!) One final little issue: I'm running a longbow via galleon to our undefended city of Sapporo. I've marked it on the map below.

What's left of Japan:

Lead us on to glory! :king:

lurker's comment:
I assume the answer is no, but when you switch from a non-charismatic leader to a charismatic one, do you get to assign extra promotions to your existing units?

I go ahead and trade for gems with Shaka, sending him excess copper and horses in return (he already has sources of both - huh? )

Are you using Bhruic's unofficial patch? The odd resource trading shouldn't happen then, it does occur in normal BTS 3.13 though.

This is a great, interesting game to follow, good luck! :)

lurker's comment:
Regarding Oporto, essentially this is the same as having grassland/river tiles with (electric) watermills in State Property, isn't it?
So while having this on sea is uncommon, it doesn't seem too overpowered to me. Adding dikes though... :mischief:
