re-researching technologies?

I had a great game going at about 1500ad, kicking some French ass, when for some reason I was forced to research the alphabet. Now it says I haven't researched mathematics, pottery, and a lot of other primitive technologies. What's going on? I'm playing the DOS version in DOSBox. Any insight is appreciated, sorry if this is a newb question.

I see that this is your second post. So I assume that you have only recently acquired CIV Dos. Are you sure you copy has not been patched? Where did you get it? There are a lot of patched versions that may have unpredictable side effects.
