Real Epic (Longer research times without longer production times, etc)

Ok I finally sat down and did this. It really didn't take as long as I expected. If anyone has any problems or questions just shoot them over in this thread. I don't think its necessary to open up another thread just for an updated version of a basically identical mod. However I made the folder name "Real Epic BTS1" because I may merge it with DCM and other great components and create a Real Epic BTS2 someday.

Enjoy,

Shiggs

I also just added this to the file DB, with the original instructions attached. If anyone notices any problems with the years passing by/number of turns on normal/quick speeds, please let me know. The former format was done in iYearIncrement, and in BTS I had to do it in iMonthIncrement, and I did the math rather quickly, not to mention I've never really played out a full game using this mod, so haven't experienced it first hand.

If and when a BTS2 version comes out it will include many tweaks to the original mod. Such as changing tech/production/wealth efficiency for individual era's among adding other components and various adjustments that I do to most mods that I work on.

here's the actual link instead of just an attachment.

Real Epic BTS1

Maybe I am a terrible player, but I had a fairly decent start.

Yet about 2700 BC with four cities I am still researching my SECOND tech (roads then pottery), while my enemies are founding buddhism and building archers.

Something is wrong.

Suggestions?

I played on Noble-Normal speed.

Thanks a ton for this BTS port, but could I make a humble request?

Please add the same "Idle" build queue option as the original mod has. I constantly have to build chariots/missionaries/whatever and disband them in order to have SOMETHING to build.

Building research, wealth, culture, etc, doesnt come for quite some time, so the original "Idle" feature would be helpful. Thanks a lot.

its a really long a tough early game from my experience. This mod is by no means what I would have done with it. Thats reserved for the BTS2 version. This version should have been an exact replica of the original. Henceforth I'm confused about the Idle process not working.

I'll look at it sometime, though the AI seems to be able to handle it quite well, not going bankrupt or teching slowly, that I've seen. Then again, I was playing at normal/emperor level.

Which brings up another point I wanted to make... I'd really recommend playing this at normal or higher, since the ratio of tech vs everything else is so ridiculously one sided, and the effect gets worse the less number of turns. On the BTS2 version, I'll probably cut tech cost in half of what they are now. I mean it makes no sense to take 40 turns to relocate your palace, yet 216 turns to research animal husbandry.

Other than looking into fixing the Idle process, the BTS1 version is done. I wouldn't worry about it too much though, the AI deletes its old and useless units, as long as you can handle it, its fine for now.

Any new changes other than that will be on the BTS2 version, when and if, I begin work on it.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions

Well, unless I downloaded the wrong version, the Idle feature (+10% hammers converted to culture/tech/wealth) doesnt exist in the BTS1 version.

I play Warlord, and sometimes the AI overextends itself and runs out of cash due to mantainance at the very early game, but thats on Epic speed. I have since played on Normal and it works great in that aspect.

On Normal speed, it really works out. You can research tech moderately quickly (as in not spending an hour getting a tech), without missing out on the chance to have an epic war every unit upgrade.

Nations like Greece, Rome (to an extent), and Japan -REALLY- shine in this mod. God help you if you've upset the Persians with their Immortals, as well.

Other than looking into fixing the Idle process, the BTS1 version is done. I wouldn't worry about it too much though, the AI deletes its old and useless units, as long as you can handle it, its fine for now.

Well, its a little difficult not to worry about it too much, as building Work Boats every five turns times seven or eight cities really is a chore after a few hundred turns.

However, I've already added the same "Idle" build selection to BTS1 manually. I just copied and pasted the original code from Civ4ProcessInfo.xml into my BTS1 Civ4ProcessInfo.xml file.

The code should be...

Code:
<ProcessInfo>
			<Type>PROCESS_IDLE</Type>
			<Description>TXT_KEY_PROCESS_IDLE</Description>
			<Strategy>TXT_KEY_PROCESS_IDLE_STRATEGY</Strategy>
			<TechPrereq>NONE</TechPrereq>
			<ProductionToCommerceModifiers>
				<iProductionToCommerceModifier>10</iProductionToCommerceModifier>
				<iProductionToCommerceModifier>10</iProductionToCommerceModifier>
				<iProductionToCommerceModifier>10</iProductionToCommerceModifier>
			</ProductionToCommerceModifiers>
			<Button>Art/Interface/Buttons/Process/ProcessWealth.dds</Button>
		</ProcessInfo>

Like I said, everything in the mod works fine, but that Build Idle thing seemed to have been left out - no big deal.

Any new changes other than that will be on the BTS2 version, when and if, I begin work on it.

Sounds great. Thanks a ton for porting this, and like I said, the fix is rather simple. Just that forementioned code was missing from the BTS1 version's Civ4ProcessInfo.xml file.

thanks :thumbsup:, I must of missed it or had an outdated version of the original mod myself. I'll fix it and edit it into the database.

edit: looks like i just forgot to edit the processinfos.xml.... oops.. well its fixed now.

So where is this "idle" button? I've gone into cinty manager and pressed the "focus on commerce" button and in fact tried all of them, but cities are still building units I don't want or need. I have a bunch of warriors and workers and have nothing else to build. Isn't there some way to tell a city to not build anything?

you only build it just like wealth, commerce, or research, there are no requirements, so you can build it from turn 1. It was never implemented for the city manager, nor within the city screen.

Great work on this, I have been wanting this exact mod forever and a while back i found it. Best mod ever made! Good work ^_^ Its hard, fun, and lasts a long time

only problems is the growth time needs to be slowed. before i even got my first tech people in the capital began getting sick and angry

Any chance of getting a version for bts 3.17?

Well, I'm trying this now on 3.19 and Epic, and.... It's now 3249 BC(!) and I'm well into the medieval age :D

Oh well, the year is only a number...

I have this mod, and have made my own little adjustment to it so that there is also an option for a gigantic map with enough room for all 34 civs.

i personally enjoy it, however i havnt upgraded to 3.19- im still using 3.13

im actually going to have to upgrade to 3.19 for a challenge im doing in the strategy forum, and i would appreciate it if a dedicated modder would take a look at the files for it if i upload it and update it so it works with 3.19.

either pm me or post here if your willing to do it, you could then post the updated version here for everyone to use, just be sure to give credit to me and everyone else who has worked on this.

I'd rather much have a modular version of this i can use with other mods, but thats probably not possible, If you can make this available for BTS i'll give it a shot in a heartbeat

bumping up this thread
