For fun, I decided to calculate what real life cities would be in civ using the math from the SDK (hopefully I am correct :p):

Tokyo:42 (entire Canada would be pop 41)
Mexico City: 33
New York: 33
São Paulo: 33
Mumbai: 33
Delhi: 31
Shanghai: 30
Buenos Aires: 29
Karachi: 28
Los Angeles: 28
Rio de Janeiro: 28
Beijing: 27
Moscow: 27
Paris: 26
Chicago: 25
London: 25
Hong Kong: 23
Bangkok: 23
Lahore: 22
Miami: 21
Madrid: 21
Philadelphia: 21
Toronto: 21
Barcelona: 20
Boston: 19
Sydney: 19
Singapore: 19
Houston: 19
Atlanta: 19
Washington: 19
Detroit: 19
Montreal: 18
Monterrey: 18
Berlin: 18
San Fransisco: 18
Rome: 18
Edinburgh: 8

All of America: 90
If every member in this forum joined up into a city, it would be pop 5
If you have 30 pop and lose 1, that's the equivalent of losing over a million people!

 I knew Firaxis was correct in making Sids Sushi add so much food to a city!

I always thought these numbers would be higher. It always seems that when they tell me what size my empire is its such a small number, at least most of the game.

Do edinburgh plz! lol

Whats with the food=pop thing? Ive live in a place that harvests massive amounts of food with a tiny tiny population, wearas huge cities are in deserts (Which in reality DO produce food but nothing like where I live.)

What would be the population of my home city...say with a population of ~5.1 million? or #49 on the Wikipedia list?

Does anyone else think national populations in Civ are a bit too low? I've never had more than 100m citizens announce, even when I control 60% of the world (on huge)... which is only slightly above the pop. of Germany...

For the population of earth, you would need almost 500 pop 30 cities (if my math is correct) ;)

I personally think that towns should add to the population of a city, just in the stats though, not the pop number. Perhaps, the equivelent of 1 pop? (1000 people)

Here is the current math: (pop^2.8)*1000
My suggestion: ((pop+towns)^2.8)*1000

It's because in civ4 only the city population is accounted. You don't have population for villages and so on.Probably the game cant simulate China's urban population, but i'm sure that most of the countries don't have an urban population over 100 million.

Vodlaian could you post the corresponding city population per city number like:
1 city pop =10000 people
2 city pop = 50000
and so on
