I would say if you have never played Civ I, II, or III.

Start by playing Civ II and buy the book "Civilization or Rome on 640k a day"

This tips, rules and equations which are for Civ I are basically the same for all three games (with some refinements and additions)

Its a great game that's why I am still playing after 10 years

I think Civ2 comes free with a Civ3 purchase. My case.

I agree I was still playing civ 2 few months ago.I
got civ 3 at spring this year(yeah poor Europe... )
Since I played my first game,I was obliged to admit that
the latest civ opus is uncontestably the best.I don't
(and I won't) play civ 2 any more
The three games are the same(in a certain point if view)
Each one is the same than the previous with more options
and techs and units.The main interest of civ 2 is
its customization but we can let time to Firaxis to extend
and improve civ 3.
