I've recently purchased the complete Civ4 Box, and I was wondering if there were any modpacks worth getting. I've owned the original civ4 for quite some time and I very much enjoyed the Vanilla version of Fall From Heaven 2, and thus the latest is at the top of my list of mods to obtain. I was wondering if there were any other high quality mods to look at, and I've browsed the site a bit.

Already on my list are FFH2, Necro Cristi (although I'm having trouble finding the most up-to-date version of it... link appreciated on this one.), and the Planetfall mod. I'm really open to suggestions, so if there are any decent mods worth getting please let me know.

Depends on what you like. Revolution DCM, Varietas Delectat (found in the Graphics forum), Extra, and Thomas War are really good general purpose mods, ie they are the same story line as regular civ, except with a special twist. In Rev DCM, unhappy cities can break off and form a new civ (and other cool stuff). Varietas Delectat basically just improves the graphical variety of the game. The Extra mod basically just puts in most ofl the material from all the official versions and mods there ever were, in the same mod, with minimal unofficial content. Thomas War includes just huge amounts of unofficial material and the author Tsentom does great stuff with Python.
Beyond those standard civ like mods with relatively pure emphases, there are mods that combine lots of mods and material. The most popular seems to be Rise of Mankind, though its graphics are bit demanding on a system.

If you want a good reliable sci fi mod there's Planetfall and Fury Road (better than Necro Cristi, but take out the dll to play in 3.19).

The History of Three Kingdoms is a good quasi historical mod focused on a slightly mythical vision of one region and era.

Fictionalization is strange but good.

Tholish's list would have been an excellent post a year ago. Some of it is spot on, but the opening paragraph is simply divorced from the current reality. Below are the crucial inaccuracies that need to be addressed, if not for yourself, then for others that stumble across this thread.

Re Varietas Delectat:
It is broken and will cause CTDs in it's current release. Hopefully Avain returns and fixes it; but for now you should not play it. The missing art in it currently makes it unplayable. You might, if you're lucky, get to the late game, and win before you hit a critical bug; but more likely then not you simply wol't be able to finish your games. You could try digging around and finding an old version of it, but I question why Tholish would recommend a mod that is currently broken.

Re Thomas War:
A good mod in it's time, it is no longer supported though. Also while the quote "Thensom did great work with Python" is very accurate, it has since surfaced that alot of Python causes pretty significant slow down. This mod, while interesting, and surely a great trailblazer and inspiration to modders, is not a good recommendation at this late date. Further it makes some pretty heavy changes, and expands alot. Also, like Tholish mentions with Rise of Mankind and the art being pretty heavy on system resources, the Thomas War mod also has alot of art that isn't optimized and has pretty high system demand. Personally If you're interested in what Thomas War or Extra has to offer, you should check out Rise of Mankind. Specifically I'd recommend Afforess's A New Dawn modification for RoM, as it drastically improves the performance of RoM, and puts alot of RoM gameplay changes into custom options available for the player to toggle and customize their game as they see fit.

The rest of Tholish's post is decent or good advice. But the above had to be addressed because it was simply behind the times and currently inaccurate.

It seems to me this guy is mostly interested in sci-fi or fantasy mods. In which case I don't know because I don't play those.

I think The_J has a Mars mod, but I am not sure if it is finished. It looked really cool, and I think the Dune Wars mod is pretty good too if you like the sort of stuff.

Aye, Capo was spot on there. I'm mostly after something that varies from the typical Civ game, but I'm always up for anything new, especially something as complex as RoM and Rhye's. Thanks for the suggestions, and btw I'm always open to more! :D

And if you like that, you also should look at Fictionalization.
It's Civ in an alternative world.

It's playable without any bigger missing things atm.

:yup: and the development is very fast, and will sure produce many more interesting things.

Alright, thanks for the tips!!

And seeing as its 5 minutes to midnight here, a very Merry Christmas to all of you!:D
