After some reflection, I have come up with 3 suggestions for major improvements that should come as part of the next Civ V DLC or expansion.
1. America’s perks need to be changed.
America is way underpowered, in my opinion. America is the most powerful nation in the world, and look at its special attribute – who the hell buys land in civ V??? Ok, I get it. Thomas Jefferson once paid the French for Indian land for a low price. But, to make America a better civ in the game, perhaps we can borrow some other attributes from real-life America. Its special attribute should probably be called “War on Terror.” Here’s what I have in mind:
-America should be able to conduct air bombing missions in another civ’s territory without going to war. This is obviously an American power. They should be able to remain on good terms with the civ’s government while doing so.
-In fact, America should be able to go to war without declaring war, and going to war should not affect its reputation with other nations as long as they don’t annex any cities. Instead, as long as America merely creates puppets out of the cities, other nations should simply look at this as an honorable and altruistic “spreading of democracy.”
-Every time America goes to war, it should get a free culture policy in the autocracy tree, in order to help them conduct the war. When the war is over, well… no undoing social policies, right? In addition, America should be exempt from the prohibition on having the order and autocracy trees going at the same time (In fact, F.A. Hayek cogently argues in his book The Road to Serfdom, in particular the chapter entitled “The Socialist Roots of Naziism,” that there is little practical difference between the two – central planning is central planning, and the same methods of coercion over the individual is necessary). Now, I acknowledge that this might be a little unfair for the purposes of cultural victory, but I think that America should be ineligible to win a culture victory on principle.
-This would give America a HUGE bonus, but we should also include some drawbacks from real-life America. For example, roads should spontaneously fall into disrepair, the national treasury should provide a smaller bonus, and public schools should provide negative science and cost twice as much.
2. Umm… Israel?
Okay, let’s have a little bit of intellectual honesty. If Polynesia, Denmark, and France are so-called “civilizations” and the Statue of Liberty is a “wonder,” then Israel is a civilization. I assume the only reason that it has not yet made it in is because their colors would make them look just like Greece on the map.
Their leader should be King David. Their unique unit should be a variant of the worker is armed with a slingshot and capable of ranged combat. They should have a combat bonus that increases if more nations are hostile to them. Also:
-They should start in a useless desert with 2 warriors. They must wander and find a barbarian camp and capture it, which becomes their first city.
-They should be able to remove city walls from enemy cities by merely walking around them.
-If they are defeated, when the year 1948 rolls around, they should immediately be restored to a few cities at their original location with a respectable up-to-date military, displacing whatever has developed there since and the nation with the highest score at the time should be forced to pay for Israel’s military for the remainder of the game.
3. New attributes to the game should reflect modern stupidity.
A new culture tree, bureaucracy, is in order. It should serve the purpose of making the government less efficient and more expensive, while spreading unhappiness and discontent. Each policy should be some three letter government agency ostensibly designed to some necessary or noble goal, but should actually be totally incompetent and expensive. Things like the TSA (which should reduce happiness and increase travel time for units within the borders), FHA, FDA, ATF, and FEMA come to mind.
Also, in honor of environmentalism, there should be new victory type: environmental victory. One can achieve this by reducing their civilization’s productivity and population to zero. Well, maybe it shouldn’t be a “victory,” but it should remove the player from the game with a message giving them a good feeling about being a good steward of the planet and stopping the rise of the oceans. Or something like that.
Any thoughts on these suggestions?
