Every so often, I get stuck with a "ghost" on the screen. I've found refreshing the display (by changing the resolution and back) fixes it. However it messes up my icon layout, is there a way to do it without resolution?

I tried the color depth, too, it messes up my icons as well

Rebooting is even more of a pain, though!

Ctrl+alt+backspace restarts X.

Spoiler Actual helpful information :
Right click the desktop, hit refresh.

Thanks, but I've found it doesn't work.

Nope, there is absolutely no way of doing this. Googling for the answer instead of opening a thread would be a waste of time. Really, not even pressing F5 would work.

Not that kind of refresh -- it doesn't work. I know that changing the resolution or color depth does do what I mean, I've heard it referred to as refreshing the display.

I'm not sure how to do that on an LCD.

Cycle the power on the moniter?

You mean turn it off and back on?

yes, that's what I mean.

Be sort of painful, considering my monitor is several feet off the floor....

Just tried to see if I could lift my foot that high. I knocked everything off the desk, including the keyboard and mouse.
