Religion Late Start

When I play Civ 6 I don't usually try for a Religion victory so I don't even start the Mystic development in my Civics tree until very late. If all my cities are already converted to the religion of another Civ can I still create my own religion later on?

You'll have to check if there are Great Prophets (the only unit that can start a Religion) in the great people screen. If there's a Great Prophet to still be gained, you can always start a Religion no matter if your cities have converted to another or not.

One trick to keep in mind is that every city you have that has a Holy Site in it will convert to your Religion once you use your prophet to start it. So you can grab a Great Prophet and then just have him hang around somewhere. Then, once you have your cities up and running, and with a Holy Site in each, you can "pop" the Prophet to mass convert your empire to your Religion at once.

This definitely feels like an exploit, but I do that all the time. I remember when someone first told me this, I was astounded how much trouble this could save me.

Yeah, once I was racing to the final prophet. I got it, but by that time, Gandhi had converted me and all my nearest neighbors, and I knew if I started my religion on the one holy site I had, it'd be pressured out right away. So I held on to the holy site killed Gandhi, popped the prophet on my holy site, and suddenly the six or seven hold sites GANDHI had made (while I was making an army to kill him!) converted to my religion immediately, so I had lots of my own pressure. Was pretty satisfying

I don’t think it’s an exploit at all, I think it’s the only way you have any chance of converting your empire if another religion has already taken hold before you found yours. The pressure from all those other holy sites would wipe it out before you could get your first missionary!

Well it's not that hard, trick would be to accumulate enough fate to immediately buy an Apostle and launch Inquisition and then start wiping foreign religions from your cities. It's very doable, but obviously costs a lot more faith than just have your cities magically converted on the turn you found your religion.

You can if you have the sacred site with a shrine and somehow are making great prophet points either from the shrine, the revelation wild card policy, which makes 2 great prophet points per turn or build the Stonehenge until the great prophet appears. You also have to have space for more religions in the religion screen.
