Religions that are missing and should be included

I don't see the point in going over the reasons why there are only a few religions in the game as i am sure we already know them.

My $0.02 worth:
Aussie Lurkers Idea is a good one
People could choose the name for their religion (i think this is already mentioned) (so you could have Meleagerism) and that name would remain the same for all nations for the rest of the game
You could choose the traits of your religion from a list, and each trait could only be used once (so you have say 4 traits for religions, once 1 religion has been found then the next time a religion is founded they will only be able to choose out of 3 traits etc)

Should be in:

Manichaenism
Zoroastrianism
Sikhism

Mithraism!

This is one I do wish was in it!

PS
To the thread starter: Atheism is not a religion.
(show me an atheism church or a priest of atheism...)

.

Young Mens Reformed Cultists of the God Bel Shamaroth (I may have spelt it wrong)
Omnism
Blind Io
Ofler
etc etc etc

in all seriousness though sikhism should be in and even if atheism is not allowed an absence of religion should be. However in my personal opinion atheism is not merely the absance of religion as it tends to be much more.

for the religous techs i can chose

Primitivism
Pacifism
Freedom of Religion
Organized Religion
Theocracy

what if i wana make relgion illegal?! what if i try to creat a 1984 type state?!!? i want a choce to make ALL relgion illegal!

Funny, I mentioned Meleagerism on another thread not long ago. I am sure that when the modding starts you will see all of the religions mentioned in this thread plus some "extras" ;) .

Lol, totally :P. I'm not so bothered about having so many different religions, so long as there are a fair amount of them in there and that they vary in style quite obviously. Like i don't want to have a Christian empire, and then when i play an Islamic one, have the experience to be the same - i want to have varied religious experience.

I really don't have a problem with the religions they chose. Sheesh, you people are too picky.

If anything, I would have liked to see one added (Mithraism), but I can cope without it.

Religions should be limited so nations fight over holy cities and the like. If there were enough religions so that each civ could have one, there would be no point.

I think not having traits with religions is the only thing that Firaxis could have done. Too much of a minefield to wade into. Furthermore, the world religions are so large and diverse that assigning any trait to a religion would be inaccurate. They also seem redundant with civ and leader traits. Even acquired traits seem a little dubious to me; if you're going to have religions acquire traits, why not have civ traits be acquired? The cause and effect of the latter seem a lot more obvious. I also worry that allowing the player to choose the traits would be too powerful. If there are traits, they should reflect the time and location of the religion's founding. If the city is a trading hub, perhaps the religion enhances commerce. If the city is ethnically diverse, perhaps the religion has more effective evangelism. If the city has changed hands several times, perhaps the religion is more militaristic.

Cultural limitations to religion don't work. Judaism, Christianity, and Islam were all founded by Semitic peoples. Buddhism and Hinduism were both founded in India (as were the excluded Sikh and Jain religions). Besides, this is alternate history.

If you want to have Catholics, Protestants, and Orthodox, then you need to have Shi'ite and Sunni Muslims and Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana Buddhists (and I'm omitting some still). Then there's Hinduism, which is so fractured and fragmented that calling it an organized religion is a joke. We see Christianity as being a diverse community, but that's because most people on this board live in predominantly Christian nations and see those other religions from the outside.

Arguably, Judaism shouldn't even be in the game since there are only about 14 million Jews in the world. Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, "Chinese traditional religion" (called Confucianism and Taoism in the game), various primal animist African religions, Sikhism, and a couple others have more adherents. Admittedly, without the Holocaust, there would be a lot more Jews in the world. Zoroastrianism would be an ideal replacement. See here for more numbers: http://www.adherents.com/Religions_By_Adherents.html

Makes no sense. Why would France have the ability to be an Afro-Asian religion. Why would France be able to choose a religion that was founded by civs who are not even in the game

Firaxis had two options. They could use made-up names, and thus risk appearing foolish and like they were belittling religion. Or, they could use existing religious names that people recognize, and risk historically inaccurate things like a Japanese Jesus. Both had drawbacks and they just picked one.

As far as France having an Afro-Asian religion, well, their Muslim population is increasing much faster than their Christian population, so we may well see that in our lifetimes.

Ancient Egyptian
Greco-Roman
Indigenous faiths (maya, inca, aztec, etc)
