Religious Idols or Desert Folklore?

Sorry for not providing a screenshot, but Windows 8 won't let me take them while I'm in a game. Which of the pantheon beliefs do you guys think is more valuable in this situation? I tend to value the culture a lot more than the faith, which is why this is question for me. The way I see it, I can probably pull off a religion on emperor if I go with religious idols, but it would be easier with desert folklore. What do you guys think?

hit printscreen, and then go to My documents/... /games/ civ 5/ screenshots.

There is a .tga file there, what you can open basicly only with Photoshop or Gimp. With either you can convert to regular format like .png or .jpg

As you think about this, consider what belief will give you to the most yield over the course of the game. Religious Idols might seem the clear winner there, with +1 faith and +1 culture from each gold or silver tile, but desert folklore may surprise you on this map.

Your capital has 3 gold tiles, all of which are likely to be worked most of the game, and 14 desert/floodplains tiles that you are likely to work all game long (including all the floodplains tiles, the riverside and oasis-side hills (farm those) and the gold tiles).

There are also two expo sites with gold nearby. One to the SW along the river has 2 gold hills (I would settle directly on the riverside gold hill--would have done that in your capital as well), and there is plenty of food (flood plains and wheat). That site has 8+ additional desert tiles (not counting those in your capital) that you are likely to work all game long, once you get your pop rolling.

The second expo site to the SE has another gold (also has copper), but NO food, so that's kind of blah. More likely a third city should be planted at the mouth of the river to the NE, for sea trade routes. That site offers no gold or desert, so put it aside for purposes of picking a pantheon.

Summing it up: Once the 5 gold tiles are worked, they will give 5 faith and 5 culture with Religious Idols. The 22 desert tiles (which includes all 5 gold tiles) will give 22 faith with Desert Folklore. Of course, it will take a while to get to 22 pop to work all those tiles, but ....

Not on my pc so cant open the save, but whenever i find myself in such a situation, i tend to go for religious idols... i love the culture too much. Although it depends if the next cities i will settle also have some gold/silver nearby

A good DF start means you will generally win all of the total faith CS quests as well as making it significantly easier to spread your religion for CS quests.

This will typically compound into more culture CS allies throughout the game and almost always provide more culture than religios idols. Even more so since more faith means more leverage to both spread and purchase culture buildings such as pagodas and mosques each providing +2 CPT. Let alone the fact that more FPT earlier means you actually get to chose your religion beliefs rather than pick what's left.

Long story short, unless DF won't provide benefit for a while (e.g. taking it for your 2nd city location that isn't even yet founded), then the DF bonuses will outscale RI.

It's impossible to tell without opening up the save to know exactly how much Desert is near you; and how many of them are useful tiles even without desert faith. (Flood Plains, Oasis, and Hill tiles are the ones that matter more than flat tiles)

I take it though that this is a legendary start and you have either wine or incense as your primary luxury? If that is a standard size map, legendary start will give 7 copies of your primary resource. (If it is wine; its tiles you'd want to work soon anyway; if it is incense, it's not quite as good)

I went with desert folklore in the end, my reasoning being that I could use massive amounts of faith to buy pagodas to compensate for the lost culture.

Ok, but I wouldn't choose Pagodas for culture. I think its happiness I would choose Pagodas for.

For Culture, I would choose Cathedrals. (Great works of Art slots.) If you don't get this; it's a long time between the time you fill the slot in the Palace until Museums.

I would still take pagodas+mosques for culture victory but I think he meant to offset the early game culture from not taking religious idols and not towards an actual CV

Cathedrals are really only powerful if you cannot manage enough of Sistine/Uffizi/louvre and have fewer cities. Otherwise, getting about 15 archeologists out for roughly 1 landmark per city + 2 museum slots per city + the wonders is taxing enough already that cathedrals don't get filled or that their net benefit kicks in way late and does not come close to the FPT/early CPT benefits from mosques and pagodas.

I like Cathedrals because they give you somewhere to put your art between Guilds and Archeology. An AI usually beats you to the Ufizzi and sometimes the Sistine on higher difficulties. So unless you skip the Artists Guild you will probably have a few Great Artists hanging around until you can get a slot for them.

Yes, but I'm playing Shaka, which inevitably means a lot of conquering, so I chose the Pagodas for the happiness and culture to stay afloat.

Are you on steam? You can use Shift+Print Screen to save one that way.

Edit: Woops, its actually Shift+P if you have the steam overlay enabled. It will go to your Steam screenshots folder.

You can change the overlay to any key/combination you like.

I use the tilda "`" key on mine, it defaulted to F12 I believe which would have the unfortunate affect of also loading my last quick save :(

I don't think you can change it on a per game basis, so choose a key or combination you don't use elsewhere regularly.
