Religon in Civ3? (NOT A ANTI RELIGON THREAD!)

Food for thought:

At Easter time we have the symbols of eggs=fertility and rabbits= fertility
Easter comes from "Ishtar" the ancient goddess of fertility
We celebrate Easter in the spring to celebrate the beginning of the planting season

There is some truth that Judaeo-Christian beliefs have adapted former pagan festivals for their own use.

Symbols of Easter eggs and rabbits are secular symbols of the season much like Santa Claus for Christmas. They are aChristian symbols that coexist with Christian symbols and beliefs. There is no question that Christianity adopted many nonChristian festivals and put a Christian spin on them. There is a world of difference between saying X and Y share Z things in common versus saying because X->Z and Y->Z, Y<-X. Of the three Christian festivals only Pentecost is un-secularized.

If were going to add religion to civ3, you would need to add the newest religions:
humanism {man is god}
-- reduction in power of GL for military
actions
-- increase in corruption
wealthism {business ethics}
-- reduction in happiness
-- increase in gold
-- increase in corruption
statism {political correct victimization with state supported quota solutions}
-- reduction in influence
-- increase in ability to create trade alliances

Since you are not ignorant of Islamic history, you must have heard about muslims soldiers killing, raping and plundering christian nons IN THE CHURCHES in Etiopia.(This is not an exaggeration, it is fact.) However, these incredibly dispicable acts were probably the exception, even the leader of that army did not like the way it's soldiers acted.
The Crusaders did similar stuff to the people of the towns they went through. Infact at one point they resorted to cannabilism.

What about the J. W.'s and Mormons. Mormons could have like 100% population growth bonus becuase of all the wives. J. Witnesses would have limited growth because only 144,000 make it to heaven.

I think religion in Civ3 would be a great idea, but instead of, or perhaps in addition to having the premade Christian, Muslim, Jewish etc. for the AI the option for the player to create a religion of his own using something of a point-buy system for its religious traits. That would be really neat, you could have tons of fun with it. Unfortunately, religion will never be added into the game, especially not in the expansion PATCH (sorry, couldn't resist).

The point-buy system was what i was trying to say earlier.

To address previous statements, both muslim and christian religions have been heavily involved in war and political intrigue (especially the christians). To anyone who is biased against muslims because of recent events, I advise you to study history a little and maybe you'll get a better overall view.

Religion shouldn't offend people at all, and if a good model was found, it should be introduced into the game. But that's the problem, finding a good model. It can't be too complex if it wants to get included.

And also i don't think crazy cult-like christian spin-offs should be included (ie Witnesses, Mormons, KKK and their ilk), don't even seperate it into orthodox and roman catholic. Just the generic religion is fine.

I agree with Omega Zero and bobgote, the point buy system would be really great(i mentioned something similar first earlier)
Unfortunately, we won't see in the expansion pack. I think it would definately make the game better and more interesting, just because it would make your civ so much more personal.

I think there should be a custom civ just as in MOO2.
Let us pick our own civ characteristics which could include religion or any other and enter our own cities from any country we like with a Kenny or Barbie look-alike for leader :egypt:

You can do this in the editor

I like playing for high scores on HOF. That excludes use of the editor.:egypt:

Why are you all making it this complicated?

The way I see it there are 3 basics of religion - Polytheism, Monotheism and Atheism.
Polytheism rose out of people's need to explain the world around them, so it gives +25% research.
Monotheism was created as a means of oppression (the first 'God's of monotheistic religions were in fact the rulers of the ancient mediterranean city states) so it gives +25% production.
Atheism was invented by the people who got tired of the endless bickering over who killed who, and just wanted to get on with their lives, so they get +1 happy face ;)

Seriously though, seeing the speed at which this thread is growing, it really is no wonder that this never made it into Civ3 - Firaxis would still be debating the actual implementation if they hadn't decided not to bother with it.

And they chose wisely IMHO. As someone pointed out earlier, religion is already in the game in the form of Temples, Cathedrals,etc. and frankly I think this is all the attention it deserves - it is after all just another means of oppression. (no, I wasn't kidding about that part :) )

How do you figure it is means of oppression. Clearly you have not read the bible and the message of Jesus Christ. Anyway, I don't want to start a discussion on religion, no one is wiser after the discussion, they are just left pisst-off at the other person.

Believe me, it's hard for me to resist the temptation to engage in a religious debate, but I agree this is not the place.:)

Let me assure you however I have read both the Bible (and the Quoran), being very interested in the history of the civilizations that wrote them, and found them both to be highly enjoyable books. The words, however, are not the religion IMHO.

On topic, let me just sum up what I really wanted to say: That religion is just another part of culture and doesn't deserve any more attention than what it already has in the game. 'Nuff said.

Someone could start up a thread in the off topic forum. And we want to make it complicated because it would be more fun. :)

Also, Jehova's witnesses' special unit would be a door-to-door-boring-to-death unit, with the moves of an explorer, able to go into ANY city in the map, and makes 3 happy citizens unhappy in these cities :lol:

You could get the advance of "Christian Values in School" making every University you have worthless

:lol: good one Plomeros !

And the Amish ! What about them ? The tech tree of the Amish would stop at Middle-Age :)

Good think about the Amish is that you can make as much fun of them as you want... As long as it's on the Internet, no worry of one of them flaming you :lol:
