Just rolled this one:

Spoiler Bumpy :

I see no luxuries, but an epic start all the same. Haven't advanced past turn one, so who knows what other interesting things the map may or may not reveal. I usually aim for CV with Cyrus, but i might have to consider an SV.

I've also posted the save file if anyone wants to have a go. It's Persia deity continents standard everything else.

Feel free to post any of your own interesting starts. Keep the rolls random--no edits.

Did you settle in spot or move to the plains hill to the left?

well, i thought long and hard about that, moving and settling the plains hills was always a go-to move from civ 4 and before days. Doing so loses the perfect IZ spot though, either the stone hill to the SW or the forested hill to the W. Plus, doing so gains 3 mountain tiles in the capital's city radius, which by itself would've been ok, but losing the the +6 IZ would've lost some of the game's epic appeal. thought also about settling the stone hill to the NW but didn't want to lose the chop, and since i didn't know what was north of that, i didn't want to the lose the marsh to the south, a free farm for a while and then a free population point once cleared. i also figured that there would be so much production in Pasargadae that that loss of one extra P in the cap would be lost in the math, so if nothing more than for epic's sake, i settled in place.

im no Deity player. But I'm tempted to play this just because... wow. It's not like it'd be a huge time sink either, id likely be dead by turn 20 :)

do it, your self esteem will heal. i wouldn't consider myself a deity player either. i am cozy at immortal, deity isn't so bad once you get past the early rush if there is one, but you usually have to plan on taking a few cities, which cramps my style but does add interest to the game. my war tactics are steadily improving, just have to be prepared.

i just noticed that even though you'd be gaining 3 mountains to the SW by settling the plains hills to the W, you'd be losing 2 mountains to the NE, so only a gain of one. still though, losing that +6 IZ even if not that b of an fd... (plains hills W would still allow a +5 IZ, plus you'd gain a P in the capital)

Here's an interesting one for Immortal France standard continents.

It's not only very aesthetically pleasing but also very unique. Lake starts are rare enough but this one with these mountains next to it almost looks like its own natural wonder. Also a Huey Attell can get two perfect chateaus from that tobacco.

After exploring a little bit, the surrounding area is also very beautiful and interesting. I never play the same map twice, but this one I might actually make an exception for.

And really, Paris has a chance to become huge. I'll have to give this one a try as soon as i'm done with the other game above. Haven't played Catherine yet other than a few opening moves, so a good reason to. on immortal building the wonders you set out to from the beginning is usually possible, so yeah, two perfect chateaus and Huey in waiting. I've never been to the French countryside, but this setting looks like i'd imagine, plus there just has to be another hill or two in the fog.

what do you think about settling the rice west, don't you get one extra food?

honestly I'm not sure, I never settle on bonus farms because of the inspiration and water mills. I just settled in place because of how cool it looked.

As far as what's out there. I'm not sure how random seeds are handled in save files, but there are great and also terrible things waiting out in that fog :please:

It is definitely not an easy start.

i went ahead and started playing the map. let's just say one civ is toast and i've forward settled hard my partner in crime.

also, i decided to settle 1 W for the heck of it. chose the lady of the marshes.

So are we starting a GotM club for relaxed play/aesthetic play (which insisted on being typed as arsthetic play on my iphone, which I found both funny and insulting)?

The Paris start is sexy. The hill start bores me.

edit: but I'm clearly not seeing something about the hill start. Something in the fog? Toss up a later pic pls.

the hill start just had so many 2f2p tiles to use in the early era, and then once i got open sky or the culture pantheon my civics sped up pretty good. i am usually counting all the hill/production tiles at the start to see if it's going to be a good city or not. plus grassland hills are great places to put Pairidaezes on. the good early production helped me win a prolonged but lucrative early war while still building a couple districts, traders, settling several cities and providing for defense on the western front. amenities were a challenge early on, but i have all my cities at "happy" now

That would be neat, I sometimes take pictures of nice starts thinking I'll make a thread about it. Particularly nicely enclosed mountain areas. I've never thought to save the files though, If I come across any again I'll post them.

That start with cyrus..... I would flood the world with immortals and so build an encampment + barracks asap. 2 builders to just do mines, a rush to apprenticeship after unlocking the tech for the immortals, and spamming warriors in the mean time. And then, unleash hell on whoever lives on this land.

EDIT: Didnt notice the save file. i'm so doing this.

EDIT2: And yeah, we need a revival of the Deity Challenge Lineup. Was very fun and probably what kept me on CiV for so long.

Here is a nice looking immortal standard continents Japan start in a picturesque river valley between two mountain ranges ending with sea access.

The initial location doesn't show anything so here's a screenshot of the immediate area explored a few turns in. The save is from turn one though.

Despite effectively knocking out Kongo in the early game, he still kept amassing tourists and had i knocked him out completely, i could've saved myself many turns. Steel was an afterthought, even so eiffel tower didn't do much for me, but maybe that is because the Pairidaezes already do a great job of increasing tile appeal. missed the Cristo Redentor 4 turns after i began it, so clearly there is some optimization that i need to do.

But my people were happy, and in the end that matters and lets me sleep at night;)

Deity Challenge Lineup was a monthly thing on CiV.

Some guys from the forum tried to find interesting maps, or even tweaking them with in game editors, and then poste a Turn 0 save on the forum for everyone to play. The purpose was to win as fast as possible but it wasnt uber-competitive. A lot of advices were given and being able to confront your choices versus the choices of other players on the same map, with the same leader, same AIs and CSes was a great way to learn.

Leader changed every time, trying to use all leaders before starting over, there were special maps like "Valentine's day map", or "Christmas map" and all challenges were graded either easy\mid\difficult etc.

It was really fun to play the game that way.

Here's an example : https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/the-deity-challenge-line-up-42-portugal.553493/

i think this is the anti-relish, so sauerkraut:

The settler spawned on the empty tundra. explored area looks kinda like a turtle, which is what you will have to do for a while. It's England, emperor, continents, large for the beta vi gauntlet if anyone wants to have a go. it does look viable enough to get through some water techs. i don't think i have the patience for it.

@cazaderonus - I have been thinking about posting an Immortal Challenge - not necessarily starting a new series, just trying a one off to see if people would be interested. The Challenges Series kept me very entertained for a long time!

Here is a wonderful Norway start. Norway for some reason I find always has terrible starts; never on a river and two thirds of the time it's not even on a coast it seems.
This one here is perfect though, the most sheltered harbour capital to launch invasions on everything without ever having to worry about being hit from land. It also has four and five tiles of mountain adjacency for holy and science districts -and neighbourhoods.

Norway
Emperor
Standard Speed
Continents
No mods
All DLC
