Remove Unwanted Religion when it Becomes Prevalent

Hello, playing Maria Theresa, really powerful UA btw founded my own religion little after Pacal who then used missionaries to supplant my releigion from my Holy Site while it hadn't spread anywhere else. Is there a way to switch to my original religion? There are still followers of my religion in my Holy Site but less then those of Pacal and the religious pressure of Pacal's religion is greater then mine. What can I do? Any heretics I build seem to be working in favor of Pacal's religion

If you have a city that is still a majority your religion, then buy an inquisitor there.

Missionaries and Inquisitors are localized (for the religion made) to the city they are bought in.

else you need a Great Prophet, which is always based upon your religion.

That's.. a good question, actually.

I did this to a hostile civ earlier, I sent my inquisitor in and purged their religion from their holy site when it hadn't spread anywhere else. That seemed to quite literally kill the religion.

Keep in mind that you need to have Enhanced your religion to get an Inquisitor. So if you have an un-Enhanced religion, that option is out.

Your best bet is a Great Prophet. Turn off the automatic faith purchases, and then buy one from a city that still has your relig. This of course will require plenty of faith and a city that remains your old religion.

The only other option I can think of is to go to war and raze some of his cities. That might lower the religious pressure on your old Holy City.

Someone from Firaxis posted (I believe on the 2k forums) that your religion will continue to convert people and that it will eventually take back over the Holy City, it just takes awhile.

Hehe, I always make my religion semi-dominant, at least on my continent or immediate area.

It's really good that Great Prophet eliminates rival religions and spreads my own AND can operate on rival civilizations' cities as well as CS. I wonder if inquisitors can operate anywhere but in my own cities - being able to use them in at least City States that are allied with me would be nice
