Remove your forces or declare war

If they're looking for a fight, give one to them. Simple solution :p Think - what was the easiest way to bait the AI into combat in Civ 2? (without a reputation hit) Send in some juicy settlers to wander around their cities!

Just declare war if you don't like it. What's the big deal?

(There is no reputation hit as long as you cancel the peace treaty in the diplomacy screen first. War is an honorable activity. )

I was not aware of that. There is no reputation hit at all?

It is not a dishonor to declare war to protect your people. It is only a dishonor to say one thing and do another. Declare war before you attack.

There is still some mystery surrounding reputation. But generally, you can renegotiate any peace treaty after 20 turns (or the default peace treaty can be renegotiated at any time).

Points:

* Reputation is not the same as whether they like you or not, but more a measure of your honest dealings. They may not like you because they are jealous of your wealth, or because you are weak, or because they just don't like your face. However, they will also remember that if you promise peace, you keep the peace; if you promise gems, you provide the gems; that your loans are paid on time; and that you are a leader whose word can be trusted.

* Keep in mind other treaties you have made that may complicate the situation. For instance, suppose you have an MPP with India and Japan. If they go to war with each other, you will be forced to break one of your MPP's damaging your reputation.

We cancel a peace treaty and there is no reputation hit?!?

Peace treaties are for twenty turns, an interval of at least twenty years -- or even a thousand years! After that you can renegotiate or cancel and still have fulfilled your promise. Generations come and go. People forget the old ways, the ancient heros become myth. :viking:

(Also, you can renegotiate or cancel the initial peace treaty at any time.)

If you prefer, when renegotiating peace, ask for the secret of the atom: when they refuse, declare war. But be very careful of the implications of your treaties. There is no warning of bad deals, such as making a deal for luxuries while finding out you would have been better off declaring war. ;)

I hate that "Remove or declare war". In my last game, I had just finished a war with Rome, and they had a few straggler units in my territory, I gave them a few turns, then said "Remove or declare war". War it is. This was bad for me, because I had just gone off War-Time, switched from Communism back to Democracy, and stopped producing units. I thought they weren't really going to fight, but I was wrong. They sent in a massive number of units, and I had to waste another 5 turns switching to Communism (I have bad experience with Democracy in long, drawn out wars).

no none. Only if you are on their territory and have an ROP when you do it (a surprise attack on enemy city w/out a ROP counts as the same thing), or have some treaty happening, or a many-turn trade still in it's 20 turns. When you do it right, there is no rep hit for war, although it does make a difference with WW if you start it.
