Your reputation is a very important part of how you deal with other civilizations and how other civilizations deal with you. By reputation, I mean the amount of respect and trust other nations have for you. This is shown next to the name of the leader of the civilization when conducting a trade (shows Gracious, Polite, Cautious, Annoyed, and Furious).

Gracious- This will most likely happen when your two nations are either
a.) Conducting A LOT of trade and you are giving free stuff to them
b.) In a mutual protection pact with the other civilization
c.) In a military alliance with that nation against an enemy civilization.

Polite- The civilization does not consider you a threat and trusts that you will not betray them (ex. attack a city while under a right of passage agreement)

Cautious- This will show if the civilization is not wanting to rush into any agreements with you and/or they fear any troops placed around their cities.

Annoyed- The civilization clearly does not trust you.

Furious- This will only show if

a.) you are repeatedly trying to force the civilization into giving free tech, cities, gold, maps, etc.
*** NOTE that if you want to choke free stuff out of other civilizations, station troops in their territory near all of there cities. If you place all your strong units near there capital, they will eventually give in and give you anything within a reasonable basis to prevent a war with you.

b.) The civilization has been in a trade of luxury/resource with you, only to have the resource or luxury depleted/pillaged/disconnected and result in that civilizations investments to go to waste. (This is actually very useful if you want to get some good stuff and not give another civilization resources/luxuries).

***NOTE that if you go into a resource/luxury trade with another civilization and then cut off the resource yourself by pillaging, you can reconstruct the road and the renewed supply of that resource/luxury will not have to be given to the other civilization (they just wont trust you anymore).

c.) You are at war, or have recently been at war with that civilization.

Remember, your reputation will affect all trades you make with other civilizations. Good Luck!!!
