Rerolling Maps

Pretty new to Civ5, starting to move up in diff. now and I realized that "any" start just does not cut it anymore. Ususally playing standard pangeaes or continents with about any Civ and default map settings.

Do you frown upon rerolling maps if you find your spawn is lackluster ? I am totally against manipulating map-settings because I just want to try to be able to beat most of the maps out there, not some tweaked ones.

How much freedom do you allow yourselves to get a good start ?

In a single player game, I don't hesitate to "reroll" if my start stinks, although it's rare, with the start bias, that you don't have something you can do fairly well with. Multiplayer, of course, you would need consent of the other players, I would think.

Often though it is a function of WHO you start next to. Don't generally want to be sandwiched between Monty and Bismark on the same continent ;-)

I usually don't hesitate to re-roll considering that my average game (huge, 22 AI's) is a several week long affair.

I don't like giving myself an unfair advantage, but if I do get a horrid spawn I will re-roll.

I find myself rerolling 40 times before a game on average, because you know, my pc loves to troll me. A desert start is a no-no for many people i think

Since I spend so much time in a game, I have no problem with re-rolling my start. Usually the starting location itself isn't too bad, but if I find out after a few turns that I'm left with no where to expand or I don't really care for the layout of the map from the initial outlook, I'll restart the game.

Only thing that gets annoying is the looooooooooooooong intros when you start your map/scenario

Like others have said, a game of Civ is such a long commitment that I don't feel guilty about rerolling until I get a start that I'm happy with. I usually reroll until I get a start near a river with some good resources nearby (or a good coastal start depending on the civ that I’m playing.) If I like it, then I will play for a few rounds to explore the area and I may reroll again if the area around my capitol isn’t to my liking or another civ is too close for comfort.

But that being said, I also like to play at a level that’s slightly above what I could probably beat with an average start. I can usually always win on King but Emperor is a struggle. So I shoot for a good start on Emperor. I would rather have a hard game with a better-than-average start than an easy game with an average start, if that makes any sense. I can usually catch up with the AI by late game, so I want a better-than-average start to be able to survive the early game.

This, it's way more fun to have a challenge :goodjob:

That being said having a bad start may be to much of a challenge ;)

I don't re-roll ever. If you need to re-roll your starts you should turn the difficulty down. The AI doesn't get to re-roll its starts.

Starts get quality checked for food, luxuries and the mapscript says something about a 'sexy' bonus resource in the third ring. They're rather pre-cooked.
Ever wondered why Russia with its tundra bias more often ends up on plains with nice fields of wheat nearby? Because of these quality checks the placement script is making.
I believe if a start is on grass and the script counts a certain amount of empty grasslands it automatically places one or two stone resources to improve the quality.

It's hard to get a bad start. If it's bad it's more because of the general map layout than a resources/yields issue.

I commonly do a couple of rolls to get something I 'like', but I might reject a start because a river runs too straight over too many tiles, and I like to see it bend a little more... purely a judgement of aesthetics.

I sometimes do it on the Earth map setting. Yes I know I'm picking the "good" continents usually. The only time I roll with an Africa start is if I'm on a lower level and I want more challenge. My current game I got the Egypt start on my first "roll", so I went with it. Egypt start isn't too bad (huge Earth map). I expanded into Europe anyways. Strangely no AI's spawned there, so I took it all for myself. I got everything except England (city state) and Russia (Mongols), and Northern Scandinavia which I didn't want. Along with North Africa and West Africa (after conquering the Aztecs) I should be pretty well set for this game.

I usually don't reroll to get the good continents, I reroll because I want to start in the appropriate place for my Civ. I don't know of any way for civs to start in their appropriate starting positions (except maybe running a scenario which I don't want to do).

It feels too much like cheating. Even if it's a horrible start, I still play just to see how far I can get. I haven't been able to find the perfect difficulty yet. I either lose every time or win every time. A bad start will make a guaranteed win into a nice challenge when it happens.

I don't usually reroll unless it's a horrible looking start, or if i'm doing random maps and i get archipelago with a Civ with no naval perks.

I prefer to work with what random gives me.

I do tend to abandon games that are going badly though.
