Research forever! literally...

i need help. my research always takes forever, the earliest i can get into the modern age is about 1900AD and on these forums im sure ive heard of people get there faster. can U please tell me how to do this.
 
Are you playing on chieftain level? I think there are strategies to get to the modern age around 1500-1600 on chieftain. One good strategy (and I'm moving this over to that forum) is to trade, trade, and trade. Not to mention, you outpace the AI, so set science to 100%.
 
Dont listen to other people. I mean, who cares how fast they get there, were talking about you not them. As Chieftess said, trade trade trade. Also, raise your science funding and build scientists in your cities. Hope this helped! ;)
 
On chieften and warlord the AIs dont research as fast as, you, so you are best setting your research as high as possible then selling them techs to support it, on regient and above the AI tends to keep up more so you can trade techs with them for other stuff.

Or try and research one tech first then sell it to all the other civs on the same turn, so you get paid loads of times for the same tech.
 
I find it's ALWAYS good to trade advances as MUCH AS YOU CAN.

Sell your advances, this gives you money for researching and buying more advances.

Buy advances, this obviously gets you advances, but also gives you something to trade with others, getting you more advances.

what do you do with them? TRADE EVEN MORE! :D
 
thanks, i do normally play as a scientific civ but i hadnt thought of having scientists. this is gr8. cheers. :beer:
 
Scientists don't make the difference. To speed up your research:

[1] build roads everywhere;
[2] choose Republic or Democracy;
[3] connect luxury sources or trade for them, and build marketplaces, so you can have the luxury slider at 0%;
[4] let your cities grow;
[5] build libraries, courthouses, universities, police stations
[6] build the Forbidden Palace
[7] if you can build the Colossus, Copernicus' Observatory and Newton's University, preferably all in the same city (capital or close)
[8] build less military units, so the tax rate can stay low

That should get you started.
 
The reason Ribannah's steps will work is because the Science rate is based off of a percentage of your total income. I never have Scientist specialists, as they just add one beaker. The Entertainer is the most efficient specialist, as he will make one content citizen happy. This way, you can have more people out working squares, bringing in the money. Any economic improvements will help, as well as any GPT trades.

The Scientific trait does not affect beaker production directly, it reduces the cost of scientific improvements. It also gives a free tech at the start of each new era. It is usually the tech in the top left corner of the chart.

On higher difficulty levels (Monarch and higher) the AI will research faster than you do. If you can get the Great Library, you can let the AI do all your research for you, while you get a huge amount of gold. A pre-build is almost required for this to work, however.

If you co-operate with other civs then all of you reach the modern age faster.

This does not help you win the game but it does help you build the UN or spaceship faster (plus it results in a peaceful game).

A backward civ makes no contribution to scientific progress.

If I want a quick UN or spaceship win I concentrate on reseaching one branch of the tech tree - Usually the ones with monarchy, military tradition and ToE on them as these seem less popular with the AI.

I trade all the techs on the other branches to the AI. Almost giving them away to the more backward civs.
This stops one civ becoming to powerful and creates a lot of goodwill and the AI civs reseach many more techs for you.

If you lack some techs try to declare war on a weak civ (who has the techs). When you make peace you will get all the techs and some gold + the cities you (hopefully) took :D
 
Having one scientist is occasionally useful. Say you're getting most of your techs by trade or the pointy-stick method, but don't want to turn off research entirely because you want one particular tech that the AI isn't likely to go for. Or say it's early still, and the tech you want is at 40 turns no matter where you place the slider anywhere from 10% to 100% science. In either instance you can turn the science slider all the way to zero, change one citizen somewhere into a scientist, and still get your tech in 40 turns while picking up a few extra gold.

In the early game you don't want to sacrifice growth in any of your cities, you're much better off with science at 10% than with taking one citizen off the fields. Later on, 40 turns tends to be too slow. Either raise the science rate and discover that looked-over tech faster, or just wait for trading opportunities that come a long when some tech (any tech) is first discovered by another civ.
Normally, the only time scientists (and taxpersons) are useful is when you don't need an entertainer, but working the field would create too much unhappiness. If that happens early on while you're going at 10% science, of course go ahead, set the slider at 0% and let the scientist do the work, even if it's only for a single turn. But that is an exception.
