Inspired by this thread http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=454949 and my own post there:
This is a good idea and probably easy to do. Civ V map generator marks different continents/islands as Europe, Asia, America and Africa, resulting in a different look in all of the continents/islands. Such as America has orange/red forests IIRC.

This feature could be extended to have different resources only be placed in their appropriate continents/islands, such as Tea could be found only in Asia and Tobacco and Cacao only in America.
This could make colonization more exciting and rewarding. This thread is for discussion of this idea, and possible changes to the existing resources and addition of new resources that follow these rules. :)

I'll start with a question: is this possible at all to do with the current modding tools?

Sounds interesting, although I don't know if it's possible. It'd also be an incentive for intercontinental war and trade.

What would happen on maps with islands rather than continents though?

The map generator also marks islands as different continental types.

For luxury resources this would be great. Especially when combined with the ideas for colonies in some threads. It would really make expanding into the new world more lucrative, which it was in history and absolutely isn't ingame right now. Many rennaisance era empires were based on importing resources from abroad. For example the Dutch golden age was largely based on the wealth gained through spice trade from Asia.
