Resources: rubber

Hello there

I find myself in need of rubber, but I haven't got any on the territory that's under my control. It's true, I didn't have many forests and such left when rubber started to appear, so that might have got something to do with it. Now, the world is fully occupied, and the Arabs are the only ones to posses the resource. They refuse to trade it, though, no matter what I offer. Is there a way to get it anyway, short of starting a war? I want to resolve this peacefully.
I tried planting forests myself for a while, but I doubt that'll work. Suggestions are welcome!

Thanks!

Welcome to Civfanatics! [party] and all of that good stuff.

The locations of the resources are mostly fixed. Some are depleted and reappear in other areas, but I have never seen this with rubber, only steel and coal. Either you have to have something the Arabs really want (and that is only a temporary solution) or its war time. The war will be "unit intensive" if you do not build lots, and I mean lots, of artillery. Good Luck

It is possible that you might aquire, at a later date, a resource that they don't have...Oil springs to mind. In which case, they would probably be willing to trade for it.

Otherwise, you must either do without or declare war.

Rubber is an 'organic' resource, and as such does not deplete. Kinda like horsies. Planting trees won't help any, because in order for a resource to appear in another place, it has to disappear somewhere else.

Make a stack of Guerillas, and take it by force....

Thanks for the advice, people! I suppose it'll have to be war then... I tried trading, didn't work. I even went so far as to offer *everything* I had, including cities, to see how they would react. To no avail.

Oh well...

off topic but I think titanium (modded resource) should be required to build stealth bombers and fighters

in the mean time though, I would have my non-barracks cities pump out artillery while I use my barracks cities to pump out lots of guerillas. Since artillery can go on mountains with no problem, I would take a stack of both artilery and guerrillas totalling about 10 artillery at least and the rest guerillas. I take it the Arabs don't have combustion yet? So you've got time before they have units with attack higher than 6. putting your guerillas on mountains make your guerillas with defense 12 plus the artillery and guerilla pre-gunning will take away a hp each time the arabs attack

Watch out for bombers if they get them, flak works wonders
oh, and don't sign a MA with the Dutch because they'll end up declaring war on the guy(in my case they declared war on the guy I wanted, but it brought me into it and all of the sudden, bombers are hitting me  )
anyways, go with gurillas/art/flak if you need it(maybe a 4:2:1 ratio?

Bring 5 flak. Each flak will usually take 1 hp off a bomber. Thus 4 will kill a vet bomber. The fifth is just for insurance.

Also bring enough arty to bring infantry to 1 hp, and a guerilla should finish it off. Also bring a few cavs to pick off units and run back under cover. If you wait for flight, all you need are guerillas, as the bombers will kill everything in sight.(if you have enough.) You'll need to make peace before they get tanks, as if you don't have enough infantry you'll get killed, and it is likely you'll lose your hard earned rubber.

About the fact that the Arabs won't trade the rubber, there are a few possible reasons:

1) There is an active trade embargo. You can check for trade embargos by going into the F4 screen and click on the check box that says "show trade embargos". If there is indeed an active trade embargo, then you can either wait for some turns for it to expire naturally, or declare war against the other party in the trade embargo, then sign the Arabs as allies.

2) You're not offering enough money. Did you lower you science to 0% and offer your gold-per-turns as well?

3) You're offering your cities in the trade. The AI has been modified to never accept a city in trade -- you can gift cities to AI's, but the moment you put something on their side of the table, the trade becomes "impossible".

4) Just to make sure, check that the number next to the Arab rubber in the trade screen is more than [0]. Just because the Arabs have more than one rubber in their territory dosn't mean they have that many rubbers to offer. They may be trading their excess rubber to another AI.

If it's zero, it should be greyed out, and he shouldn't even be able to put it on the table. You can trade your last resource, but I don't think you can ask the AI for theirs.

Thanks Turner. So there is one less thing to worry about :)

It increases your GPT. AI knows your income and will not accept more gpt than is available.

How can there only be one area of rubber on an entire map??? Is it a small map or something?

It could theoretically happen. More probably what happened was a city was founded on a tile that ended up containing rubber. The AI likes to do this.

Doing a Ctrl-Shift-M in game will clear the map, showing just the terrain. You can then find other resources that aren't readily visible on the screen.
