Firstly, I'd like to say well done to all involved in making such a fantastic site!!!

I've spent the last few hours touring the site and am amazed at how much information there is here .... give yourselfs all a pat on the back. How time flys when your having fun ....

Now to the question in hand (1st post so be gentle please)

Ive been playing civ3 conquests for the last 2 months and have always had a niggling question I hope you wonderful people can now answer .... its to do with resources (iron, coal, etc), is their postion on the map pre-determind at the start of a game? The reason I ask is that I love nothing more than chopping down jungles and clearing swamps but am always concerned that by doing so I may not reap the resources that may appear on such a tile in the future ..... simply put, if I chop down a jungle to grassland will coal still appear on this tile in the future? (when the relevant advance is made of course that allows coal to appear)

Also, when coal (for instance) appears on a jungle tile that is within my citys radius, will it "run out" quicker if I clear the jungle to grassland? And is there something that determines how quickly a resource will "run out"?

On my last game, my only coal source "ran out" but a few seconds later a "new" source appeared!!

Im just using coal as an example, as it can appear on a tile that be changed. Obviously the same doesn't apply when resources appear on hills or mountains as these tiles cannot be changed.

Im sure I will have more questions in the future but lots of reading to do here 1st!!!!

The disappearance rate for a given resource is set in the editor, and does not depend on whether you've cleared the jungle from a tile or not. The only thing that matters is whether you have a route from that tile to a city. If the resource is connected to a city it can disappear. Whenever a resource disappears, it will reappear elsewhere on the map, and it can only appear on terrain where that resource is legal. So, if a jungle tile is cleared, but was originally set to have Coal, the Coal will appear there as scheduled. However, if the Coal source is exhausted, it will reappear somewhere on the map, but only on jungle or hill tiles where it can appear--not on grasslands that used to be jungles.

Yes, there is a lot of information here and it will take a while to digest it all. And while much of it is good, keep this in mind. Civ III has three versions and not everything applies in all versions. New units were added, new civ traits, new wonders, etc.

Most everything still works. Advice on how many workers, how to research using the smart slider, trading and such are equally valid across the versions. City placement strategy does change depending on the version.

Most people in the CivIII forum use/play CivIII Complete (C3C). This is a three-disc one-install that includes vanilla, Play the World and Conquests, with each version fully patched. The default version in C3C is Conquests, but C3C is easier to type. Unless you indicate differently, any question you ask will be assumed to be C3C.

Your question has the same answer regardless of version, in case you were wondering.

Welcome to the forums!
FYI, the AI knows where future resources are going to show up. I've read here of examples of the AI settling seemingly worthless swamps or tundra that later develops coal or oil.

The only thing that matters is whether you have a route from that tile to a city. If the resource is connected to a city it can disappear.

Hopefully I will remember this the next time, last week I spent 50 turns setting up a palace and core cities, one of which could have built the Iron Works, only to have the coal dissapear on me, it was a loud scream when it happened.

:band::cheers::high5:

In MY Humble Opinion, this is the most useful and finest game forum on the Internet.

To further expand on the subject of resources, the number of available resources depends on the number of civilizations in the game. The greater the number of civilizations, the greater the number of resources.

Also, you may wish to check out the Creation and Customization Forum for what you can do with the editor for the various versions of the game.

dittos timerover51- i get more useful info on this site than any other which is why i'm still playing C3C. the search engine is much improved, but wouldn't it be great if there was a decision tree to move through that listed information in folder and subfolders.

Thank you all for your contribution ..... big help :D

I should have maybe explained myself further by adding in yester-year I started with civ1 then civ2 then civ3 PTW. I was given C3C ages ago but didnt a chance to get into it until last few months. So tho im not a pro by any means, i've got the basics covered (i fink!!) ......... must admit tho ..... its flippin addictive isnt it!

Ps just about to post a new question .... problem with powerplants .... any helpers???

Patience, grasshopper. ;) Your questions will be answered in time.

As popular as this game is, it's not as popular as it once was. While there is a relatively large group of us that still play, it might take some time for us to get to your thread and answer it. But it will be answered.

(Okay, as of now it has been....;))

Thefinker-now you've got me curious. What happens to the iron works if you lose your coal? I was under the impression units, immprovements and wonders that require a resource do not disappear when the resource is lost (I thought even if you've started the build and lose it you can still finish it)

Anyone know/care to set me straight?

I'm pretty sure the bonus from IW still applies if you lose the coal and/or iron. Of course, you lose the tile bonus when it disappears.

And yes, all you need is to have the resource when you start building the improvement/unit/wonder. If you lose it before you complete it, you can still complete the i/u/w.
