Due to not being able to use Civ 4 like I hoped I have had to return the game to Amazon.co.uk simply due to the game not finding the damn DVD drive even though it looks at the damn drive the DVD and then tells me “please insert the correct CD-ROM, select OK and restart application” I find this very odd that a game these days is so badly written that it needs people out side of the company to try and fix it.
Why don’t games companies employ the right staff to get the game right in the first place?
I read somewhere that the publisher moved the publishing date up should be a load of bullocks as you should only release a product that is working out of the box, does that not make the product libel for people to take you to court and get there money back??

I have a mid range computer and I see no reason as to why Civ 4 wont work but there again call of duty 2 does not work quake 4 did not work till the patch was released both of those game had the same problem Civ 4 now does,

NO one can find a F****** DVD drive what’s this all about hey ??

And before someone tells me that I have not get my PC setup right I would like to just say that I have done everything I can think of to get this f****** game to work.

I feel that the writing of computer code these days is getting very sloppy due to the amount of space they have to play with, I.E. the standard hard drive these days is 80gig where in the old days you had a lot less and so writers had to make things work and not leave it so people either get board with the games play and put it on the shelve or just make do with a half decent game.

Right to the things I have done to get this pile of crap to work are.

1. Installed the patch
2. Check all my windows 32 drivers
3. Update the firmware on my DVD drive
4. Unplugged all other drives in the computer
5. Tried installing onto another PC “that played the game” so its not the DVD
6. Even changed the “locale” of the computer in the hope I had a US DVD but no

So the conclusion here is that if you want an up to date game you either wait for mouths while the forum people sort out the crap or you don’t bother at all.

Or is it a case we all buy a standard computer like a Dell ?? Then all the hardware is the same and you don’t get the crap excuse that it’s a hardware issue.

Right I’m off to play quake 4 now that things works.

Just an after thought I have also tried to use the NODVD crack no luck there also tried "the harkfix" no luck there either what was the other one humm it was something to do with hiding driver it was some EXE??

please go play quake and stop whining and writing a bunch of stuff so someone else can figure out ur gaming problems. All these new games do not work on ur computer. Gee, wonder what that means...

If I want to complain about a product then I have that right to do so and no one person can tell me other wise now back off

I have moved the DVD drive around from first slave to second master and no good I have also tried my DVDRW with the same results.

And yes I know the DVD drive works
And yes I know the game works on another PC
And yes I know I’m an ass

another point i would like to make just out of intrest is how the feck did it get so many adards in two months ?
http://www.2kgames.com/civ4/awards.htm
it should be an award for the crapyest game every writen not the best

John s

PS i have seen the game running on a laptop of a friend and the graphics are good but thats all i'll give it.

My first advice is to calm down. Slamming the game, or the state of the industry, or other people, won't do any good.

Then get someone with hardware knowledge and let him have a look at your PC. If so many games don't work, then it's almost certain that the problem is your PC, not the game in question.

While Civ4 hasn't been a shining example of compatibility since its release, the problem you have is rather unusual for this game, which further supports the explanation that something in your PC is the problem.

The reason why the game has so many awards is simply that many, many people regard it as a truly great game.

ok then so why does civ 3 work out of the box i have just reinstalled it after not being on my system for a while and it works no patches no crack odd hey ??

There have been a lot of technical problems with CivIV. The major problem I had was apparently related to the XML initiation procedure preventing startup. The problem was traced to (of all things) the sound recording device setting for Windows XP's 'sounds and audio devices' not being set to the default setting the game was expecting. (This issue has probably been resolved now with the latest patch). Phoning up tech support for this game didn't help me. The only way I found a solution to the problem was by scouring the technical support forum of this website. Maybe someone else has had similar difficulties to yourself. Try doing a search of and/or reading through the Technical Support forum. If that fails do a Google search - there's almost always someone out there who's got some useful advice written up somewhere.

This chap: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Storage/Q_21023708.html seems to have had a similar problem.

OR maybe this might help: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;228985

HTH :)

Because Civ4 and other modern games use Flooberjudibits and Civ3 used only Berjudibits. An early revision of Berjudibits, I might add.

The conflict your hardware has with the games only interferes with Flooberjudibits, while older games like Civ 3 and Master of Magic will not trigger the problem.

Also, you may want to update your havenabannadiddilydoo.

Seriously, we all have enough headaches diagnosing our own computer problems to do all the research for you and find out yours. I do promise you though that there IS something wrong with your computer, and the fact that those games don't work is your problem to fix, not the software makers. If you bought a computer and didn't dink with it at all, then the manufacturer should help you figure out why and how it's broken. Otherwise...

You're in the position analagous in motorcycles to:

Whenever I drive the unpaved county roads my seat falls off! When I take the smooth paved state highway, everything is fine! The county needs to fix their roads!

And my analogy answer is: No, it doesn't. You either need to replace the missing bolts securing the motorcycle seat, or hire someone to do it!
