016. Sold second resource, gold, to Napoleon. Napoleon is also usually very rich early game. But my gold came out too fast to give me the full payment.
017. With the gold from Napoleon, I was able to buy a Library in the capital. The construction of the National College will start after Granary is completed. I was considering whether to pause Granary and head straight for Natioanl College, but decided not to, because the extra food during National College should be able to push my population to 5 several turns earlier. I will then be able to assign another citizen to mine, accelerating the construction of Natioanl College.
018. Since I had a lot of early cash, I used them to buy more tiles in order to harvest even more resources to make more money. After 5 purchases (Gold amount: 150, 165, 180, 195, 210) I bought the riverside Wheat. This capital really has a huge number of mining resources. There are still 3 more (2 Silver, 1 Marble) to be claimed! I was getting impatient with the city's natural expansion, and ended up paying double prices to purchase those 3 tiles later.
020. Stats on Turn 79. Pretty standard dead-last through all categories at this stage (although Spain's production seems weaker). The Empire team's technology goes pretty fast - 15% already. Iroquois has only 5%. That's more difference than a standard game without teaming. I wonder how required flasks are calculated for teams?
021. Time for second policy. As planned - I travel down Liberty to go for Meritocracy. The free worker in Citizenship is totally unnecessary. Never had a game capturing 3 Workers at the start before.
022. Here comes Washington's Emissary again! He forgot to bring gift again, but Hiawatha said yes anyway to avoid conflict with the Empire team. It turned out to be a bad decision, as I'd like to declare war on the Empire team a lot sooner than I planned. I wanted to befriend with Inca, so I was unwilling to declare war on a friend and gain the negative diplomatic modifier "You have declared war on a friend".
023. The Empire team and Aztec has signed a Research Agreement. I am not too worried about its actualization, as I have 90 turns to eliminate Aztec on Marathon. I am just unhappy because one of the Empire team's members (probably Washington) will have 600 less gold to buy my next resource.
The Iroquois capital is a miner's paradise, with 4 Silver, 1 Gold, and 1 Marble! If I settled in the original birth place, I will get another Marble instead of the current one, but losing 2 valuable farming tiles including a riverside Wheat.
025. Elizabeth was a disappointment - she only had 224 gold! Maybe it was her who signed the RA with Aztec and lost 600 gold. The game interface just used Washington as he was the first on the list. That could be our gold.
026. Now all but the Marble has been harvested and traded, I saved up just enough gold to purchase a Settler. With Natioanl College, Iron Working will come soon. I hope to sit the settler right on 6 units of Iron even if it is right in the middle of nowhere, or if the capital has enough iron, some other very nice moneymaking spots so I can sell even more resources.
027. Iron Working completed, Classic Era! In this game, Aztec entered the Classic Era even before the Empire Team, so the team's technology advance rate shouldn't be as terrible as N times of the regular rate. However, the Empire team did enter Medieval very quickly.
028. There is no Iron at home, but a 6-unit rich deposit is close by, right in the middle of Rockies. Population will be miserable here, but I have not only 6 units of Iron immediately, but also 2 more Silver and 1 Ivory later. I might be able to sell one more Silver to Inca later, and keep one for Iroquois people's own happiness.
029. I had bought 1 more warrios at this point, and plan to buy 1 more. So I can have 3 Mohawk Warriors. I traded away the extra 3 units of Iron and a lot of income to Isabella, who was the richest member of the Empire team (I got all of her cash in this deal) and the only member who is willing to declare war on Monty and YES! City State Venice!
Why do I bribe Isabella to war Venice? This is a insanely useful move in team game. I learned from experience that when multiple Civs are teamed together, when one declares war on a City State, all the other team members will be forced to declare war on the given City State as well.
And we know that any Civ has only 1 chance on declaring war to a City State and get away with it. The second time it will be permenant war with the target City State, plus the risk of more City States voluntarily joining in the permanent struggle. This 1-chance principal also applies to the team, but with a very disastrous outcome.
When Spain declares war on Venice, Isabella could potentially get away from a permenant war. But since she pulls in Washingon, Elizabeth, and Napoleon all in the mess, Venice instantly gets 3 more war declaration from the same team. The second one already suffice for the permenant war status and perhaps more CS enemies, and there are still 2 more war declarations! One could only imagine what happens in a 1 vs. 7 game.
030. I also loaned all of Washington's cash. This is the point that I want to declare war on Empire team and realized that I shouldn't have declared friendship with Washington the second time.
031. Bought Warrior #3 with the cash. I worked out the math so I loaned just enough cash to upgrade all 3 Warriors to Mohawk Warrior. My income becomes negative, but I have a small but efficient army to maybe steal a city or two from Aztec!
032. As the Mohawk warrios were approaching the Aztec border, Monty quickly sensed the danger and came to Hiawatha with a fat peace treaty. 1027 gold sounds really good - we can use it to buy another Warrior and upgrade to Mohawk! But we are here to take Aztec's weak cities! Can't let a golden oppurtunity slip away like this.
033. Monty was frustrated with the refusal, and quickly moved 3 Juguars to intercept the Iroquois force. The Iroquois scout was hurt, but so were the Juguar. Another Juguar was not in full-health possibly because he was recalled from Venice.
Hiawatha only smiled at the interception. He ordered his army to retreat a little bit, so the Juguars move into the forest... let the war begin!
