RFC Classical World

Maybe you should it playable, but make it more about surviving the onslaught of several empires over the centuries to preserve Greek independence in their native lands.

On a completely different topic, I feel Carthage probably needs tweaking in terms of ressources, starting units, etc. to make the game more interesting, because the empire management is quite bland and the only point of interest is conflict with Rome, which can only be won by really dirty trickery that's more exploitation than anything and makes me feel bad for breaking the game.

can you suggest any UHVs for the Antigonids?

can you be more specific about Carthage? I've had fun games with them and beat Rome without feeling like I was cheating.

Why not the Greek city states instead of the Antigonids?

The Antigonids controlled Macedonia, some Greek cities and Asia minor, it would be hard to find some UHVs for them. The only option is to try and control Alexander's empire, so they ll share a common goal with the Seleucids

but for the Greeks you can find some more interesting goals, eg:

1) control Greece, Macedonia, Thrace, Asia Minor , Sicily, Marseille etc
2) be the most advanced civ by X BC
3) never lose a city before X

or, you can always make a Gothic civ playable :P Europe miss late game Civs

edit: trying a Carthaginian game atm ... do I have to control 6 different type of luxurious goods for the 1st condition? cause I have 2 silver and it counts as one luxury

First of all, the Antigonids ruled over southern Greece from Macedon, mostly ruling out the Greek League except for a few cities here and there.

Second, the Antigonid UHVs could be as follows:
1) Insure there are no Roman possessions in North Africa and the East in 70 BC(Anatolia, Syria, the Levant, Egypt, Greece, Macedonia).

This reflects Macedon's (and other Greek states') opposition to Rome.

2) Spread Hellenism to all of Alexander's empire by 30 AD (Christianity) (Antigonid lands are the birthplace of Hellenism.)

3) Unite the Western Greeks (Marseille, Greece, Macedon, Southern Italy, Illyria) by 150BC (earlier/later?)

As for Carthage, I'll get to that in a later post.

I had a problem where as Abyssina I captured an Yemeni city, on Mecca, and the next turn barbs spawned on top of it and auto-razed it forcing my troops out.

sorry about that. that is supposed to only happen to the AI when they are out of all their core, normal and broader regions. I think its finally fixed in the SVN and new regular dl will go up today.

it seems like a Greek civ would be fun and I like those UHV ideas.

I have a long term plan to make respawns playable and when that happens everything can be playable. in the meantime we could probably make the goths playable in the manner that Iran and Italy were in DoC, you start as another civ and switch.

the Carthage goals require different types of luxuries yes.

Pandyan changes: replaced Madurai's gems with stone to give them starting production and gave their archer UU +50% city attack.

I'm leaning towards the Antigonids now for the following reasons:

they could control the Levant at the start, making the Seleucids conquest goal much harder and generally making the Diodochi period more variable especially if they all start at war with some units.

their ambitions of legitimacy and intense rivalry makes for good goals like:

destroy or vassalize the Ptolemys and Seleucids

discover Monarchy

both probably to be done before the Armenian spawn, which gives a trade for Monarchy, and the Parthian spawn, which will almost certainly collapse the Seleucids.

the third goal could be something about the greek legacy, since they were based more in the hellenistic heartland than the others

I accidentally removed the starting techs for many non-playable civs in the later maps in the last update. svn is fixed but if you are using the regular dl here are some patched maps.

Almost certainly, given the number of civs present! Sorry if you have a lower end computer...

Edit:

On the Antigonid UHVs:

While it is easy to think of a UHV related to conquering the rival successor states, that's the main focus of the Seleucids, and would make both civs' UHVs too similar.

Now, I am aware that the ambition of the Antigonids was, at least in the years before Rome's rise in the Mediterranean political scene after defeating Carthage in the First Punic War, to reunite Alexander's empire. However, I would vote against such a UHV for the simple reason that conquest UHVs are already quite common, and so a different goal, though nonetheless militaristic, such as thwarting Western Mediterranean imperialism should be preferable for variety's sake.

We also have a UU problem: Macedon is also well known for their phalanxes, and companion cavalry is essentially the UU of the Bactrians.

My suggestion:
The *actual* hoplite, armed with a shorter spear and the large bronze shield, which were still widely used in Greece proper.

The Seleucid "hoplite", Antigonids or not, should really be renamed to "Phalanx" ("Phalangitai").

Nap, it's running normal now. That was just a problems with the maps.

Now i will give opinion with my first two games.
Spoiler :

1.As Ptolemys and after Armenia.

I started normal, easily dominated Antioch and Tyre. So I stopped the war with Seleucus.
Soon after roman quickly begins to dominate Greece. In about 200BC the Romans come to the Levant, even before it declared war on Carthage.
Rome was a superpower (I like that), but they stopped there, neither tried to dominate Syria and Judea.
After that the Seleucids fall, Parthia takes most of its territory. Judah Empire becomes very strong and dominates the Judeah and Syria in a short time.
Rome declared war on Carthage, and dominates the city in 150BC (very closer to historical date). But after declaring independence Dacia, Rome stop to grow.
The other empires were not very prominent. But the Mauryans survived the arrival of Satavahana, and Qin bore the arrival of Han.

2. As the Satavahanas.

After founding the capital, the neighboring towns to flip my empire. And in the following years I easily mastered the capital of the Mauryans, after the Empire of them fell into the hands of the Barbarians, and I followed dominating Varanasi and Pataliputra.
After the Sunga respawn (and I think they should have less units), I lose Varanasi and Pataliputra for them. But very shortly after they end up in civil war. Pandyans were well isolated by the rebel towns and Bactrians had great difficulty in controlling the Indus Valley. Until an uprising of the Sakas, cause much destruction, they do a lot of damage in Parthia and Bactria and come to dominate various cities. Lucky that his army was already saturated on arrival in Central India. Sakas became a super power in the Middle East, with a large army and going to war with many civilizations.

there were several types of phalanx infantry in ancient Greece.

the first one was the spartan phalanx (see the 300)

then, Epaminondas of Thiva and his Thivan phalanxes ended the dominance of Spartan infantry and brought a new tactical warfare style in Greece.

finally , Philip (Alexander's father) enhanced the phalanx formation and conquered nearly all Greece.

So you can introduce these different units in game , eg

UU for the Antigonids : Macedonian Phalanx (a strong bonus vs melee and cavalry -- their pikes were 6m long! )

Also I agree that they should have a goal to stop the roman expansion towards the east (see 2nd punic war )

Can anyone come up to a UB???
