RFC Europe -Art and Flags Thread

Since a while I learnt how to handle GIMP and now I can change some art files if you like. (only the color, not the form, like the new Hanseatic executive). I also can adjust some buttons. So, if you wish a different art (color) for some units, buildings, buttons etc. you just say it and I'll look if I can change it.

So far I've been getting along without doing much real graphics work at all (just borrowing the work of other artists). Finally decided to get into the re-texturing game.

That is an improvement. I am sure there are other buildings that need new textures, like Genoan Bank did, but I can't remember at the moment.

@sedna17: Have you already placed any new leaders; if yes, who?

I have begun to do it, working off your list.

I don't want to offend the many fine artists who make LHs, but unfortunately, some of them are not-so-good. It can be hard to tell from the pictures alone. Sometimes the animation is just so glitchy that it really distracts. Shoulders are a common problem.

For now, I have done:

Arabs: Abu Bakr -> Saladin
France: Charlemagne -> Joan d'Arc -> Louis XIV
Cordoba: Abd-Ar-Rahman -> Abd-Yusuf-Yaqub

For Byzantium -- Basil has problems, a strong/directed light source makes his skin blotchy and strange.

Two notes:
1st -- I have examined a large number of LHs in-game, and have tentative lists of good ones.
2nd -- the leader-head switching code currently in the game only allows three leaders. I have no particular desire to re-write it to allow four, so three it is.

Tnx for the info. I saw a post somewhere on the basic RFC forum for altering the code for four leaders. I agree it is much a bit of overkill at the present, though...
EDIT:Voila! By Panopticon.

Thanks for that link. It explains some of the LH-switching mechanics nicely. I may make minor modifications to that code, but not major ones.

The other reason to limit the number of LHs is file size. I would much rather have fewer good-looking LHs and a smaller download size.

I found some hungarian artstyle in the download section:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=13147

I don't know if it works, because i don't know how to embed it into the mod. But if it does, it ought to be in the mod, because the current ancient-greek-style kinda sucks...
It even could be used for the other eastern europe's civilizations.

I know, this was meant to be colonial spain, but the historic centers of spanish and portugese cities look similar. It could be renessaince art for these 2 civlizations.

Anyway, thanks to Freya who made these arts

Oh yeah, that art works perfectly and very accurate for the middle ages in Hungary
I absolutely second adding that cityset

These are some buildings that I found in TR that we maybe can use. I know some look fairy tail-ish, but the one we have now (like the Hospital) look too modern for the mod.

Upper-Left: Alternative for the Copernicus Observatory
Upper-Right: Alternative for the Hospital
Bottom-Left: Alternative for the Guild Hall
Bottom-Right: Alternative for the Smokehouse

Do you like them? (in other words, should I include them) Or do you think these are crap and keep the art we have?

Necro! No, seriously.

Just found this art about Joan d Arc. Better or worse than the old one? I would go for the old one, this one seems to be too gothic, much alike of a shorter-haired Amy Lee :lol:

I also go for the old one.

Hey merijn, I have two art questions:
Shouldn't we change the settler mesh group to 5 or 6? Kinda looks boring this way
Every settler group should have some kind of animal, at least one male and female settler, and 1-2 children.

The new art style for existing units should get their own buttons, or use the same as their 'vanilla' ones?
