RFC Europe: Extending/Fixing City Name Maps

Rotterdam is on the Dutch map, 1 tile S or SW of Amsterdam. However, you can't have both of them...

Of course the Welsh existed. Just like Cornish (or West Welsh) they are the remnants of the ancient Britons (pre Roman). Before the Normans their royal capital was Garth Celyn in North Wales. Since then the English mostly ruled Wales directly from the castle of the Prince of Wales at Caernarfon. Cardiff only became the administrative capital of Wales in 1955. Try Google or Wiki for Wales and read about the history. You'll find it interesting.

Cardiff existed from the 13th century or so on and was the largest city in Wales from the 16th century on. It wasn't the capital until the modern period, of course.

Bad city-site for the game, though. London, York, Bristol and Chester is the magic formula for England (with Edinburgh and Inverness in Scotland, and Belfast, Dublin and Tralee in Ireland).

New ''refining'' of the maps. Some improvement in Hungary, Spanish names in Sicily, and some other minor work.

A new list, to be edited accordingly

1. Revise Denmark in Norse map DONE
2. Expand Spanish map in Southern Greece and Benelux
3. Expand the Hungarian map to the North/Northwest
4. New Ottoman map, the old one is badly synchronized
5. Fix Wittemburg to Wittenberg DONE
6. Fix Madeiras-Azores issue (Spain/Portugal) DONE
7 More work on the Cordoba map DONE
8 Even more work in the Spanish map NEXT

Thanks micbic, I think I missed this post when I was putting together the latest test release (May 5), but I'll make sure it gets in the next one.

where can I find the latest test release?

1. Where is the May 5 version?

2. Also, just realized something about the Madeira islands issue. They are there, but the problem is the city naming for them was done wrong. When I tried settling them as the Spanish, I got the names for the Southern Azores, which led me to believe that the map just really emphasized the Azores. In another game, playing as the Portuguese, I settled there, and got the Madeira names. So... this is just an instance of the city name maps being uncoordinated. (Same problem for the tile West of Leon, in between the pig and wine. Spain and Portugal have it come out to Braga, Cordoba has it come out to Vigo.)

3. Also, the 2 tile spacing rule is really annoying.

1. Where it always is: RFC Europe Files Thread. (2nd post.)

3. In the new version it is 1 tile spacing again.

Great, but micbic, you should look into the city names on those islands.

@Michael Vick: I know. Currently next in my priority list, as regards the city name maps. See post 263. Good to know though, I thought Spain and Portugal were sharing the same map. ;)
EDIT: I checked the file and the Spanish and Portuguese maps were exactly the same at this point. Are you sure you don't mean Cordoba (which is indeed unsynchronized in the area)?

Yes, I meant Cordoba, Cordoba founds it as Vigo. Also, Cordoba has a blank spot near Leon. It's a bit East of Porto, South of Braga. Cordoba's settler map in Africa needs a little work, too. It has way too many tiles that come up as al-Jazair, in one instance, I founded al-Jazair when the independent city of Alger was two tiles to the East. Maybe the Western tiles that say al-Jazair should be changed to something a little more original ;) Also, too many tiles that come out to Marrakech, the map should have just a 2x2 square of tiles called Marrakesh.

I think I fixed your issues, to the most point at least. The case here is that the area around Marrakesh is too sparsely populated, and so it is difficult to find significant settlements around there (the area the Marrakesh labels occupied has been somewhat lessened).

I agree. As the one who did the initial map I had the same problem. I decided in favour of names familiar to most people rather than unimportant ones. I'm glad you've been able to improve on my first effort. I'm sure you'll agree that actually doing some work on these issues is far more difficult than just sitting back and sniping from the sidelines.;)

Haha, I'd help but I can't get the city name maps open on my computer for some reason.

As said before, any changes to the city name maps will be made by micbic. If you want to make some suggestions, fine. Open up an early civ like Burgundy. Go to Worldbuilder. Put your tags on any tile you want. Save game or make a screenshot. Post it here. micbic will look at it and make changes as required.
It's as easy as that. OK?

Ok, finally figured it out. :D
I shot my Monday evening doing all this, hope it makes a difference.

Sicily -
1. Moved "Agrigento" one tile to the right to replace "Castrogiovanni". Changed the original "Agrigento" to "Mazara del Vallo"
2. Added "Caltanissetta" to the blank tile in the middle.
3. Moved "Siracusa" one tile to the right to take up the blank tile where "Siracusa" actually is. Changed the original "Siracusa" tile to "Ragusa".
4. Added "Pachino" on the Southernmost tile with the marble.
The rest was left the same.

Sardinia -
1. Changed "Alghero" on the Northwestern corner to "Sassari". I understand that "Alghero" refers to an actual Spanish base there, but it was actually a lot farther South so I just put that city on the hill to the South which was blank anyway.
ALSO, "Alghero is the English spelling, on the map it should say "Alguer".
2. Under the hill where "Alguer" now sits was "Oristano", that was either the English or Italian spelling, but in Spanish it is "Oristan", with an accent above the "e", so I changed that.
3. I know it's pointless, but I added "Lanusei" to the mountain tile.

Corsica -
1.Sorry for not including a screenshot, but the Southwestern tile on Corsica should be "Bonifacio"

Italy -
1. The only names already there were "Reggio" and "Napoles", I left those the same and added names on every tile up to Florence. :)

Genoa -
There were no names here at all, I just added a few names along the coast.
(Genoa was under Spanish control for a time, and in my games I always vassalize them but I don't think any tiles in Genoa are on the Spanish settler map.)

Misc. - I added a name to the island "Pantelaria", East of Tunisia. I added names for the indy/barb cities on the coast. (tunez, tripoli...) I added "La Valeta" for Malta, but we could just change it to "Malta"

No need to check the names. Most of the cities were there since Roman times, all of them are in our time period, no t Italy names. They are all done with correct Spanish spelling and grammar, the ones that needed accents are indicated in the screenshots. :D

Thanks. Now, as for the accent thing, I think I removed them, because many computers (including mine) had problem showing up the characters.

EDIT: BTW, expect my contribution time to be somehow less for 1 month. School exams.

So those names will be on the next test version?

I'll work on Morocco and those other Indy cities in Africa now...

I hope so...

As I'm doing the map for Morocco I realize that Tangier is on the northernmost tip of Morocco, why does it spawn 1 tile south???
