I have already finished the settler map for France. Here is the one for Spain. Most of the cities were founded before 1200 AD. I have 2 questions.
1-Does every civ need its own settler map, or can they all be the same?
2-Are settlers going to be able to build cities within 1 tile of the nearest city, like in Rhye's of Civilization?

Thanks for all your work on the Spain map. But I do have some problems with some of the names you use and the no. of them. I think most of the cities in Iberia will already be in place at the start as independents some of which will be flipped either to Al Andalus or the Christians. So there will be little scope for founding new ones.
That makes alt. starts for existing cities fine but maybe just the surrounding ones. Also, I differ with you on so many different names between cities. Most of them are not important enough. I'll try to alter the basic map to simplify it if I can. BTW What happened to Almeria in the SW and Girona in the NW? Both were important in this period.
This map shows the most important cities IMHO.

We did, but only with starting positions for indys. I'm nearly finished a new one from scratch with every square allocated. No offense to our new friend. Just thought i'd try my hand at it. Hopefully back in a couple of minutes. BTW It's hard to find some things on the old thread. Is it because of the hack?

How can I read that? It's in code. Is there a Worldbuilder save? Anyway, some of those
names are't correct. Burdeos and Bayonne. They're in France. Alot of the others are in Italy.

I have already finished the settler map for France. Here is the one for Spain. Most of the cities were founded before 1200 AD. I have 2 questions.
1-Does every civ need its own settler map, or can they all be the same?
2-Are settlers going to be able to build cities within 1 tile of the nearest city, like in Rhye's of Civilization?

I've had a try myself and saved it in the last thread. To answer your 2 questions.
I don't think every civ needs its own settler map as i think that location names are more important. As far as building cities, I think there needs to be at least 1 square between them. I'd prefer 2.

BTW I think the following cities will be independent in 500 AD to represent the Visigoths.

I think the idea is that Leon is the Christian start with a small army and a couple of settlers. Then the Arabs land at Gibraltar in 700 AD with a bigger army, Cordoba flips to them, becoming their capitol then Sevilla and Granada flip to them a couple of turns later. After that, it's game on I believe.
If I were playing either, then founding Santiago and Pamplona would be the priority for the Christians. As the Arabs, I would capture Toledo and Valencia straight away then head NE to Zaragoza and Barcelona.

I agree that 11 cities is too many at 500 AD but how will the 3 in the south appear later
(in 550 and 600?) As independents? I thought we agreed that the Arabs flip those 3 when
they spawn on the south coast in 700 or whenever. That being said I still favour the inclusion
of Badajoz rather than Pamplona as the Christians could found it with a settler as I've described.
But I'll go along with your original 7 to start with.

Have you looked at the settler maps suggested so far? ijnavy and I have each proposed one
for Spain and Portugal though mine is just a refinement of his. There's also the link that
Umarth posted which seems to be a list of code covering much of the Med but no map. I don't
know to read that. Is there a map? Can you look at these 3 and give us your opinion which is best?

I agree there's many other areas to do yet. I'd like to continue work on North Africa and
maybe England/Ireland if it's not been done (even with the Arctic placeholders)
You suggested Eastern Europe as an area to work on. Maybe you could allocate certain
areas to different people. What do you think?

BTW Thanks for bumping the other threads. I'll address any further remarks to the appropriate

The whole point of doing the city maps is so they can be put into python, using worldbuilder is just a convenient intermediate step (you can then use my <a href="http://meat.arvixe.com/~joeyroe/rfc_citymapgenerator.html">convertor</a> which I have linked several times.

I realise that this is a very democratic project but I feel you are starting to become very disruptive. You are constantly arguing details which is completely out of place in this very early stage of development. This would be more excusable if your contributions to this project had amounted to more than just discussion. When this project was last in full swing I gave you many opportunities to try and do some legwork, nothing that needed coding skills just some time, effort and research and you gave ridiculous excuses like a computer crash stopping you from using a simple web-based form. Now, with 22 civs to do you choose to redo not only the one civ we got done before this all went on hiatus (and done perfectly well - D. Zavotell did a lot of research and included cities in Italy and France because either Spain once controlled them or we could reasonably expect they might in RFC) but the one civ you <i>knew</i> someone else was already (mistakenly) working on. That is completely counter-productive.

As for ljnavy's questions. They are not a matter of debate. Every civ does need its own city name map, that's just the way its coded, some may be in part or in whole duplicates of another but every civ still needs their own. And unless you're going to take over the coding we will not be changing the rules for founding civs. I'm sure ZZZ would agree that neither of us want to write a mod from scratch. We are modding RFC and as such we should only be changing things to adapt it to our European scenario or we are giving ourselves an infeasible amount of work to do.

I'm going to second much of what Umarth said. While it's great to have contributions from everyone, we're not at the stage where we can argue details yet - and these are pretty minor details at this point, except for the fact that all of the proposals you have made elevate various aspects of the Reconquista over any and all other facets of the mod.

Same is true of the maps. I've got to use placeholders because in order to incorporate new terrain and resources we're going to have to create the new mod (and it doesn't make sense to do it just for terrain and resources.) This is a big project, and we're going to have to do a lot of things to get it off the ground - but right now extra proposals are much like that Grishnash idiot's vague ideas of mods that he would like to see created, without having done a second's work beyond excreting the idea onto the internet. We're all capable of that - the hard part is working together productively to get a full mod going, rather than perfecting the Iberian peninsula and hoping everything else magically falls into place.

This isn't meant to sound as hostile as it probably comes off as, but I'm frustrated - we're finally starting to do real work again, and the same old arguments are being advanced as if they had never been discussed in the first place. I'm just waiting for the first person to ask why we aren't including the &%&#(*@ Irish.

If you're willing to do city maps, would you be willing to take a crack at Bulgaria or Turkey or Poland?

I'm glad you have finally decided to return with comments in detail to which I'll respond. I'm sorry if you regard my attempts to help as disruptive as they are meant to be constructive. I realise that many of you have been busy with more important things for the past couple of months so I have stayed quiet out of respect.
You say you have given me chances to contribute other than discussion like time, legwork and research which is what I thought I had been contributing anyway. What other things was I supposed to do?

To suggest that my computer crash was a "ridiculous excuse" is totally unfair as my only other resource for more than a month was my partner's inferior computer which won't even load Civ3 let alone BTS. As far as your reference to the python facility I confess that I have no knowledge of what python is let alone how to use it. I've only just learned how to use Worldbuilder. Please forgive my dumbness.

And regarding my attempt and that of ljnavy to make settler maps for Spain and Portugal that is because NO settler maps have ever been done or posted in the thread to my knowledge. The contribution made by D Zavotell may be helpful as you say IF you can read the code in the link .
I have no idea how to translate that to a readable map so I don't know what he's contributed.

Some of us would like to contibute to this project in any way we can but not having the computer skills that you seem to possess limits my contributions to historical research, suggestions and the kind of map work I was trying to do. I'm as keen on this project as the rest of you so I'm sorry if you feel my efforts so far have been unhelpful or disruptive. Perhaps it would be best if I withdrew from any active participation for now and allow you to get on with your legwork. I'm sure I can find something more useful to do with my time.

For the record, the reason I asked if you'd be willing to do Poland or Bulgaria or Turkey is that I know those aren't the areas you're most interested in or familiar with. I think (and I'm speaking for myself here, as well) that we have a tendency to get overly focused on the areas that we know well and care about, and can be rather protective of changes made to those areas. From your first appearance on these threads, it's been clear that you know a lot more than I do about Spain, North Africa, and the history of that part of the world. That's great - I mean that sincerely - and it makes you a great resource for putting that area together with maximum historical accuracy. Unfortunately, there is literally nothing in this mod that will be precisely accurate historically, no matter what we try to do with it. Even the things that we manage to get right may have to be changed due to issues of game balance, which is my #1 priority for this mod.

So, what I'm proposing is that we all stretch beyond our usual comfort zones on this, and try to create something broad enough to be useful at this stage of the game. There'll be time and space to modify things once we've put together a working skeleton for the mod, but at the moment we're painting the fingernails of a doll while the dollhouse is still a pile of boards. Let's focus on getting the house built, then work on details. I'm not rejecting your help, or questioning your expertise - I'd really like to see it applied to one of the other things that need doing, and if historical research is your forte, why not employ it on an area that none of us know that much about?

Thanks for a more constructive and thoughtful contribution. Perhaps Umarth will try to be similiarly understanding in future. The suggestion that I used my computer crash to dodge work is plainly insulting. As for modding skills my knowledge compared to other people's is ZERO. So my best contribution will lie in historical and geographic research, not just in Spain but in other areas.

As an ex-modeller and wargamer I have a lot of useful stuff on weaponry, armies, etc. from most of the period covered. And with 40 years of studying history including two degrees I feel I can contribute quite a bit to the knowledge we need through research. I'm happy to look into other areas that you suggest such as Turkey etc. but I'll stay away from maps if you like and leave modding to people who actually know what they're doing.

I know this is supposed to be democratic but a little autocracy wouldn't go amiss. Better to play
to your own strengths rather everyone trying to perform tasks they're not best qualified for.

Is that all you can come up with? I never said I couldn't do settler maps. I did say that I did not know how to read the map you posted because it was in code. And that I made a settler map of Spain because NONE had been posted, to my knowledge. And I did suggest I could do something else, but never criticized other people's work or ideas any more than you have done. Perhaps you could try reading what I wrote and spend less time trying to insult me than you have so far in actually doing the legwork you always keep talking about.
If you've contributed so much more than everybody else, why haven't we seen it?
