Damn. . . I forgot about Eastern Oregon. I should have known that. . . I didnt' realize that Florida had part of the state in the Central Time Zone.

What is bought by the yard and worn by the foot?

Before airplanes were invented, a suspension bridge was being planned to span a violent river. There was no way a boat could carry the suspension cables across the violent water, and the bridge could not be built until the cables were in place. The builders decided to hold a contest to solve the problem. The contest was won by a young boy. Shortly thereafter the cables spanned the water. What contest could have been used to solve this problem?

I dig out tiny caves, and store gold and silver in them. I also build bridges of silver and make crowns of gold. They are the smallest you could imagine. Sooner or later everybody needs my help, yet many people are afraid to let me help them. Who am I?

The third one's a dentist. I'm working on the other two. I'd say the first one is cloth of some kind. Cotton, linen, etc. And the second one I'd say a balloon hoisted them over, or they waited until the river froze over, if possible.

Incorrect, on your 3rd step, there would be one human and two monkeys across the river. Like this...
(H = humna, M = giant monkey, m = small monkey)

HHm <-----> HMm

EDIT: in case it was not clear, the radioactive monkey counts towards the monkey total.

:nono: the radioactive monkey would still be in the boat... ;)

Ok, yeah, I messed up.. tired n all.

1) Leather for shoes?
2) Javelin throwing?
3) a dentist

EDIT: ah! Turner beat me :)

@turner: :goodjob: on the last.
#1 your pretty close...
it's a violent river; therefore, doesn't freeze over. nope, no balloon.

@ crackedcrystal: :goodjob: on the 3rd.
Nope, not javelin throwing. The river is too wide for that.

Nope, not leather for shoes.

Okay. . . I'm trying to think like a kid here. . .if my wife was here, she would say it should be pretty easy for me, to think like a kid.

Hmm. . . give it to a bird, have them fly it over? I dunno. . .

@ turner: :eek: have a bird fly the cables over?

It's a contest; therefore there had to be some sort of competition that the boy won, which allowed the completion of the bridge.

How about this. . . tie the cables to a giant pole, and raise it up higher than the width of the river. . . then push it over so that it falls, and drops the other end of the cable on the other side. . . hmm. . . too far fetched.

My mission here is to get the cable over. . . so I'm not thinking along the lines of contests. . . even though you said that. I should prolly pay more attention! ;)

I'm working on it, I'm working on it. . . .

Carpet. it is worn out by feet

@ turner: yep, too far fetched. ;)

@ crystal: yes, just tie the cables around the boy and shoot him out of a cannon... :lol:

umm. Oh, right.

What kind of contest was held that would allow there to be a cable raised from one side of the river to the other? That might help ya out..

@ turner: :rolleyes: everyone knows that the airplane was invented by... that guy... that invented the airplane...

No, it wasn't a contest to invent the airplane. It was a contest where someone could do something better than someone else with the purpose of allowing the cables to cross the river.

Before airplanes were invented

Arguably, they didn't know it had been invented yet, so they set out to invent it.

Hmm. . .
...was a contest where someone could do something better than someone else...

Kinda vague there. . . .Still working on it, tho.
