Just saw a trailer for this online last night. I guess they are wrapping up their beta and the game will be released by the end of this month. Anyone in the beta test? Impressions? I thought the 'rift' mechanic at least sounded interesting, and kind of a carry-over from the 'public quest' thing we first saw in Warhammer Online.

Anyone even remotely interested or looking at this?

I was in the beta. It is very much copying a lot from WoW. The quests are mostly the usual kill 10 rats, although the quest grouping and placement is much better than pre-cat vanilla wow. The rift mechanic is interesting although I do not yet know how it creates meaningful gameplay. It felt very much like "Here is a random quest!"

Confirming my suspicions its just yet another gimmicky WoW clone.

Then why reply?

Well, not all MMOs are WoW clones, and while we have yet to see the WoW-Killer, some have made some good runs at trying to do precisely that.

But this thread isnt about all that. Its about Rift. If you have no interest in the game, great, but I am looking for some actual meaningful input here so that those interested can get a better insight as to what the game might offer.

Capeesh?

I don't think its possible to have meaningful output about this game and I did answer your question. I wasn't going to keep posting though since there is nothing else to post about it :p (Other than the 2 rift styled weapons in TF2 atm, but they are pre-order only for a month).

Mobboss - how can one man be aleady bored with WOW, EVE, WH and WOT ?
You certainly go through a lot of mmorpgs.

The two big mmos this year seem to be TERA and KOTOR. I wouldnt bother with Rift most people simply say its wow with graphical update.

Iam looking forward to playing Hearts of Iron TCG and WOT (if it ever goes live)

FF, its my little circle of gaming friends to blame. We play something for awhile, longer if its fun, not so long if it isnt, but invariably drift on off to the next supposed 'cool thing' in the que.

Dont know about TERA. Am looking forward to KOTOR and hope they do it right. I had high hopes for Galaxies, but the wheels popped off that fairly quick.

Like I said, hadnt heard much about Rift and simply saw it on the release meter. I am actually looking forward more to Duke Nukem Forever, and Diablo III to be honest.

Mmh, the game has somehow raised a faint interest in me.
But the deal-breaker or deal-doer lie in the actual "design philosophy" behind it. So I'd like to ask, if anyone is following closely : what seem to be the designer's intentions ?
Is it going to be yet another "casual" thing, or will it be more involving and demanding ?

The problem with the phrase "casual" is that it is usually used as a catch all for games that people don't like, regardless of the reason. It is also market speak.

The game is a refined and polished version of WoW. From what I am reading it is kind of a WoW 2.0. If that is "casual" or not, well, that depends on what your definition of casual is.

Well, let's say, it depends if it's "WoW Vanilla 2.0" or "WotLK 2.0" ^^
I guess that PrinceStamp proved your point, because saying WoW is not casual... It would be considered trolling on any MMO forum - even WoW's own one :p

And there is my point. Games can be both. I can choose to spend 20 minutes a day on WoW doing a couple quests, or I can participate for hours at a time.

Games can be both.

Another good example of a game that is both is minecraft.

word of mouth says that rift is basically a wow clone that isn't really worth playing

Nah, I don't play fantasy games unless they involve space.
