OK guys, I'm fairly good at Warlord, I believe, so I want to move up to Regent. I am not a vet; I am trying to learn more

about the game, and want to see how it's done. Here are the rules:

Level: Regent
Civilization: Romans
World size: Huge, 60% Water
Temperature: Temperate
Climate: Normal
Age: 4 Billion Years
Barbs: Roaming
World seed: 0 (Random)
Number of opponents: 12 (Random)
Default Rules/Victory conditions
AI aggressive: Normal
Round length: 10 Turns
After a saved game is uploaded, the next player has 24 HOURS to tell us he's playing. Otherwise, he/she will be skipped.
You have 48 HOURS to play each round.

Here is the log:

ROUND I

Turn 1
Rome founded. Popped goody hut next to settler; gained free warrior.
Discovered that Rome is on flood plains, but there is grassland not too far from Rome.
Told Rome to produce a Warrior; sent the free one South to explore the extent of the Desert and Grasses.
Found coastline, ideal places to settle other cities. Sent Worker NorthWest to irrigate Desert.

Turn 2
Began research on Bronze Working.
Began actual irrigation of Flood Plain so I can irrigate to the regular Deserts.
Sent Warrior to the East; found some Hills, a few Mountains.

Turn 3
Sent Warrior East to explore the Hills.

Turn 5
Found out that the Grasses don't go too far to the East. A bad sign?

Turn 6
Rome created Warrior. I instructed Rome to begin construction on a Barracks, since Rome is still, sadly, size 1.
Fortified defending Warrior.
Finished first irrigation. Sent Worker SouthEast to begin irrigating an Oasis.
Began to send the Warrior along the Northern borders of Rome to get to the West to explore.

Turn 8
Began irrigating Oasis.

Turn 10
Got Warrior to the North border of Rome.

As you can see, the game isn't very nice to me. But I am confident the game can be won, esp. since almost all victory types are allowed. I need at least 3 players to begin; I don't have a preference for max players. :)

I usually play DG difficalty, so maybe my advices are not so important for Regent, yet I think there are some basic "Iron" rules that are vital for successfull play.

1. I see you irrigated tile, then moved worker. Never do that, you are wasting worker move. Improve tile then immediately build road or vise versa.

2. Oasis is much better mined, you get food penalty in despotism, so irrigating oasis will do you no good.

3. Major rule of all levels, EXPAND FAST. Barracks can wait, try to settle your second city as fast as possible. While you can't build settler, build granary, not barracks.

There are more points but i'm in a hurry, so, good luck.

So... should I add you to the roster, or not?

For all out there: I am obviously no expert, and this game is intended for myself to learn about the difficulties of the Regent game. I am a little miffed that I messed up so early, but the next player may easily remedy this (e.g., have the Worker mine instead, change production, etc.)

I need a total of three people at least, including myself. Who knows? We might even be able to make this a three-n00b game where all of us blunder through the Regent game, trial and error... Or maybe a master of the game will show us how it's done. I need a special kind of help, as you see. I'd love to get started, and it's a long weekend...

Oh, sorry, I thought you will play this game and take advices on the way.
I can't sign up, my regent days are in the past :)

Not a sign up. Why the BW tech? I would have went for pottery for the expansion as Leha stated above. Also I noted you did not select the tech until turn Turn 2. This should have been done as soon as you planted the town along with setting your research at max sustainable for the level you are playing. I would have also planned the worker to have the wheat irrigated after the culture expansion and then chop the forest to help build the granary.

Ok. I see where I'm goofing. I retract my offer of playing o SG here. It's too much. I messed up this bad in 10 turns. Ack! BTW, I did research BW first thing, because I prefer better defense. If that's bad, OK. I'll learn from this experience, even though I didn't even play.

lurker's comment: You did not mess it up, I think. On any level below DG it's something you can live with, 2-3 worker moves and 10 turns invested on BW.

One way you could learn more is to try and join another game; sevral SG's have been meant for training, too, so you could learn a lot from the Q&A's underlying them.

What I am doing is playing a "Logged" game in the Hints and tips forum (It's entitled: Am I doing anything wrong, here?) and it's a different game. The concept, however, is the same: I post a journal of my moves, and a screenie of the game after 10 turns. The game is at Regent, Raging Barbs, 10 opponents, etc.
