Does anyone think the road system could use adding on? I'm thinking there should be two types of road. One is the main road that we build to connect our cities. The other could be a sort of civilian road that the populace slowly builds over time to connect to resources and the far reaches of your empire. Unlike the regular roads, maintenance cost for this road would come from the citizens' tax dollars, not from our wallets (since of course, its built for and buy them). And military units can still use them. I think this will add a touch of realism, and just make things easier.

What does everyone else think?

I think that talking about roads, I don't see why they took them "away" in Civ5, I liked seeing my land transforming to the point it was not recognizable, I think it translated very well the influence of modern times on lands.

As to your suggestion, i don't get the bit "maintenance cost for this road would come from the citizens' tax dollars, not from our wallets (since of course, its built for and buy them)", but I think there's better to do with roads than just having a couple of them which is another element that makes Civ5 weird.

I know, I agree. During war, you really shouldn't be moving at the same speed as your enemies through your own territory. Anyone ever heard of home field advantage? Oh and about maintenance, I just meant no maintenance for the civilian roads.
"I ain't build 'em. I ain't payin for 'em." :D

1upt necessitates a more tactical approach to warfare, and allowing you to move faster than the enemy within your own empire is a pretty big advantage. Greater proliferation of roads would make fighting an offensive war exceedingly difficult, IMO. Realism cedes to gameplay considerations.

Then I think they should put them back, but without maybe any effect on units. (only effect on trade, +1 gold for any roaded tile would be awesome like in Civ2)

Or, we can see here and there some effects of roads on warfare in Civ5. After all, roads link cities and cities are what we are going for, so there's always some road near. I think it wouldn't unbalance offensive wars too much for that maneer (roads in Civ5, whether scarced, still give an advantage to the defender), also think about Great Wall, sure it's annoying but it usually does not prevent to win a war.
