Just got it for the PS2. Pretty nice update of the graphics and the battle system. I love the fact that everything happens on the same map, no flipping between tac and strat map. I miss the RPG elements from the prior games, but the new battle system makes up for it.

Whats you plan of action? Mine is roughly the same as prior games. Recruit and build until I have a solid force of 10-15 generals. Secure my flanks and begin to roll up my enemies. I usually reach a point where I no longer even bother to recruit officers or improve new territories. I just pause long enough to replace my losses before moving on to the next city. Eventually with momentum, I get two strong attacking forces.

I've noticed in this game, much like Civ, you have to keep an eye out for shipborne raiders. I've been hit a couple of time by this tactic, its hard to keep track of all enemy units and they can easily slip by you on water, land and work over your facilities before you can get a unit in place to shut them down.

I figured civ players would be a perfect market for ROTK games. Turn based, empire building, resource management... seems like a natural fit.

I used to mplay ROTK, but as your plan of action shows, after a while the game is repetitive. I used to play ROTK 3 and I would get Taschi Ci Zhang Fei, and Lu Bu then proceed to roll anyone in my way.

I used to play it a lot; then they stopped producing the English versions for the PC (after IV I think).

I got back on the PS2 ones - quite fun, esp when playing as a lowly officer.

I didn't play XI I think.

Is it out yet ?
Looks very much like MedievilTotalWar2 Turnbased map with Disgeae style combat.

Its out in the US. I think its coming for Europe, but have no idea of the status in Aus.

The gameplay takes place on a 3D map of China. There are no more combat screens when you enter battle. It is still turnbased combat with the same basic system. Rivers and shipping becomes a much more strategic issue than in the past as they are a much bigger part of the game. You can run a ship up a river on a raid of enemy installations, very cool.

Supply is no longer instantaneous. You need to physically move supplies and you are able to resupply units in the field. This might be my favorite change in the game.

Every officer has one skill which gives an advantage, somtimes in battle sometimes in city development. There are the classic misinform & perturb strategies along with tactics that are troop (cav, spear, bow & seige) specific. Each officer has a rating for each type of troop that effects if he (she) can use all of those tactics.

I hated XI but loved X.
