RomeoRedux Altruistic Americans (Sid)

I see it. Will try and have it back by tonight.

I just got back. (Stuck in Wisconsin with no internet....:p ) If you don't mind, I'd like to grab it.

Edit - nevermind I see Dwip has it.

I guess I've been looking for a game with the RBCiv tag on it.

I will slot Bugs in after Dwip.
Dwip UP and got it
Bugs on deck

March 1942 -

Well, here we are. Manila's in good shape, although we're not quite sure what Puerto Princess thinks it's doing and why the Japanese have yet to occupy it. In the naval sense, there's an awful lot of us, and an awful lot of the IJN fighting it out right next to Midway. Including in the front ranks, I am quite amused to see, the battleships Arizona and Oklahoma, both of which had a quite dissimilar fate in another timeline. Lastly, our airforce, such as it is, is almost entirely at Midway, and it consists of more F4Fs than you'd think possible, along with the odd couple B-17s. Forget carriers - they're all empty. At some point that needs changing.

We're currently 35 turns away on Advanced Flight and better planes, and that ETA isn't going to get any better anytime soon.

Well, except how I MM a spare tile at Los Angeles and somehow shave a turn off, but.

And we're off.

(IBT) - At Midway, the IJN attempts to cut and run. In the Phillipines, Manila holds off weak attacks by the Japanese, but our Commonwealth and Dutch allies lose a bunch of ships to Japanese planes and an IJN battleship, which sinks two destroyers while at 1hp before being torpedoed by a Dutch sub, who don't seem to suffer from our lack of decent torpedoes. Speaking of lack of decent torpedoes, our sub south of Hawaii is attacked by a Japanese sub and sinks without so much as a parting shot.

April 1942 -

Seattle Worker->Bomber, Portland Worker->Bomber, Reno Worker->Worker

First things first. The destroyer USS Morris goes after the sub I-17 and sinks it south of Hawaii. At Midway, the battleship Hiei goes down to our bombers, followed by the cruiser Chikuma, the destroyer Ushio, and the famous carrier Akagi. The rest of the IJN fleet has retreated out of air range to Wake Island.

It would appear that our bombs are much better than our torps.

Everything else is just moving troops around. There's some serious thought given to attempting to retake Apari with just GIs and the one tank on hand, but we'll give it a turn to decide. Judging by the fairly fearsome Japanese air presence in the area, I'm not sure I want to risk our ships just yet. Plus if I can attack Wake Island, I want to do it.

(IBT) - Yeah. About that plane thing. Maybe there's a guy without shrapnel wounds in our army, but I'm not betting on it.

May 1942 -

Reno Worker->Bomber

Preparations begin to bomb the hell out of Wake Island. Airlift the odd GI back to Midway to help the landings, should it come to that.

(IBT) - Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE in Japan leaps in bombers and bombs Manila. It's ugly. We shoot one down, but lose some MGs doing it. Our, uh, sub off Wake gets bombarded by artillery.

June 1942 -

Los Angeles MG->Bomber, San Diego Transport->Transport (it needs changing, but not sure to what)

More Wake invasion prep. We bomb the island, though not sure how bad the damage was. All the carriers are loaded with planes and moved/moving up, so we're good there. Also, we have a whole lot of ships, and the IJN hasn't really showed up anywhere lately, though they DO have a fleet SOMEWHERE.

Every spare piece of flak we have gets airlifted to Manila. Got attacked by, what, 7-10 Japanese bombers? We need it pretty bad. Also, a Japanese transport just sailed OUT of Aparri, so maybe it's time for that attack with all our spare GIs and the tank. On second check, the top defended went from being infantry to being a guerilla, so I think if there was ever a time...

And OT on the torp effectiveness thing:

My current reading is a history of the Pacific war. I'm up through 1942, and it's almost criminal how many times you read something like "And American bombers/destroyers/subs had this great shot at destroying some vital piece of Japanese weaponry/invasion force/whatever, and...the torps didn't blow up. Meanwhile, somewhere else, Japanese bombers/destroyers/subs attacked some American stuff, and using their highly effective torps, destroyed it."

Very sad. Very sad.

Which is why we have all these subs floating around the Pacific doing...something. Not sure what. I'm almost glad they don't find the enemy. ;)

Moved the airforce off the carriers to Midway 'cause I didn't want to risk it to IJN naval units.

And I guess all the Japanese bombers that escaped our torpedos are on Luzon?

Fortunately, I sank half the IJN on my turn. The rest is either at Wake, or steaming like hell for Kwajelien or Truk (I didn't check for harbors).

The bombers, OTOH, I thought were coming from Indochina, but if they're on Luzon, well, that's fine too.

Good work Dwip. Lets go min on the research, and buy some amphib warfare if it is out there. Are we building the Intelligence Agency? I would like to steal some Jap techs.

Playing three turns

I swap Portland over to the Intel Agency.

Wake up the 192nd Tank Battalion and attack Aparri, kill the guerilla without loss. Move some GI’s in. I drop science to 10%. The two extra turns just isn’t worth it.

IBT – The flak at Manila shoots down one bomber. There was only one other bomber. Maybe we’re starting to hurt them. The amphibious force that sailed out of Aparri sails back in.
Seattle: bomber=>bomber

July 1942 – Bombard Aparri then kill the two defenders. Capture the city.

IBT – Two bombers fly over Manila.

Aug 1942 – I learn that we won’t be able to invade Wake Island until we have Marines. Churchill has Amphib Warfare, but our entire economy can’t buy it yet. Kwajalein is an invadable target, so I move our forces in that direction. Bombing the island we lose a fighter, but inflict some damage.

IBT – A small IJN fleet sails to the east of the Philippines. Manila’s barracks is destroyed by bombers.
Seattle, Reno: bomber=>bomber

Sep 1942 – the Morris sinks a Japanese sub. I drop off some invaders next to Kwajalein. Reposition our new bombers to Midway. You can send them anywhere from there.

After Action – We can get Amphib Warfare now for most of our economy. We’re going to need some marines and transports. I’d grab it once we have most of the cash. We’ll have the intel center in three turns.

Preflight check: MM cow between LA and San Diego. All Mainland cities have Factories except San Fran but that’s due in 2T.

IBT: 2 bombers attack Manilla and that’s it.
Hilo Harbor -> worker; LA bomber -> bomber

T1: Oct 1942 Bombard Kwajalein; redline 1 defender, destroy the courthouse, temple; a bunch of F4F’s miss, then use 3 destroyers to finally redline the other MG battalion; reg LT dies against redlined MG and promotes it; bomb some more to redline again; the other reg LT dies and all we have left is a green GI. Load him back onto the transport as this is fruitless.

The sub SS Pollack goes down, barely scratching the CV Ryujo (3/4)

IBT: IJN group near Manilla goes to Taiwan; Aparri worker -> worker; Seattle bomber -> LT; San Fran factory -> CE; San Diego Transport -> Transport

T2: Nov 1942 Move troops around, no sign of enemy. I hold off on buying Amp War as CIA is due next turn and I want to have enough money to plant a spy.

IBT: Hilo worker -> worker; Portland IA -> Stock Exchange; Reno bomber -> worker

T3: Dec 1942 I have a dragnet out for the IJN fleet but I can’t see it at all.
Homeland is getting up to speed. Probably could use a few more workers to speed things up.
Try to plant a spy in Tokyo and he’s caught :( Cost was 129g. We should probably buy Amp War from the Commonwealth now (222gpt and 1644g)

Justus II is up now. He is on a temporary assignment and will get to this late Sunday or Early Monday. Comments and ideas are appreciated. Do we have our coal back?
I like to use the Hawaiian Islands cities as Worker farms, then lift them back to the mainland.
I think Marines and bombarding is the way to go.

we have 3 sources of coal, iirc. If the Hawain islands are to be used for workers, then Reno should be switched back to something else.

I agree with marines and bombardment. Then use regular units for defense.

Bad news about Kwajalein.

Marines and bombs, ayup.

Also, I wonder where the IJN and assorted bombers went off to. Because they certainly both existed not too long ago. <shrug>

Look around the map to get a feel for our forces. I agree with the Amphib warfare deal, plus it gives the Brits more money to research more stuff for us. I get the price to 1000g and 258gpt, to save some cash for rushing if needed. I’d really like Advanced Flight rather soon, (I really like the flexibility of Fighter-Bombers) but we aint researching it any quicker if I dump more money to it, so it will have to wait. In fact, if we’re going to do a minimum run anyway, may as well just put a scientist on it, and save 66gpt. I change a taxman in LA to scientist.
I didn’t remember any discussion of Mobilizing. In this scenario, it’s a really good option. Once the factory in Honolulu is done, I doubt we’ll build any infrastructure. Commercial Docks would be nice, but in a short scenario like this, probably not worth the investment. If everything will be military builds, why not get the bonus? It will bring us a little closer to our Sid allies (and enemy). But, I don’t want to make a call like that without discussion, so my goal will be to get us in a position that we will be ready to mobilize at the end of my turns, and let the Joint Chiefs discuss it. :)

After buying Amphib, most builds are swapped to Marines. Reno is put on GI’s, one every other turn, and Hilo stays on workers, also every other turn. I go ahead and rush the harbor at Midway.

Fly a couple recon flights, to make sure there’s no IJN fleets around, and I’m ready to hit enter.

IBT: No sightings (except a wounded Commonwealth sub). Marines complete in Seattle, San Fran and LA.

Jan 43: Quiet turn, still can’t find the fleet. Send a transport w/3 marines towards Hawaii, the rest will probably fly out. Use workers to change a few tiles and optimize cities, San Diego can do 35 (transport/2 turns), get LA up to 60spt, working on Reno. Patrol, but no luck. Bombard a mine near Saipan, think about going after his radar towers, but they’re guarded. Look over the defenders in the Philipines, but not much to change there. I try to plant a spy again, but Hirohito isn’t pleased… :(

IBT: Appari, Hilo workers, Manila Flak, Portland Marine, Reno GI, San Diego Transport.

Feb 43: Move ships back toward Kwajalein. This is frustrating, a ton of firepower and nothing to use it on effectively. But marines are en route. Commonwealth has Airborne Warfare, but we’re still paying for the last tech. ;)

IBT: See another CW sub, and a Dutch one, but nothing red. Seattle, San Fran, LA get Marines.

Mar 43: The OSS is finally successful, and we have an agent planted in Tokyo. My, they have a lot of ships… I investigate our next two likely targets:
Wake- Marine, Infantry, Artillery
Kwajelien- 2 MGs, Flak, Artillery, 2 Zeros. We better attack soon, it will finish Battlefield Medicine in 64 turns. :D

I move the main part of the fleet close, and use the heavy guns to bombard, and destroy both Zeros on the ground. I didn’t fly any aircraft against it, as we can’t kill them, and the marines are still a couple turns away, so anything we do would heal. There is one Marine on a DD near Midway, I was going to send him to Iwo Jima, which had an Artillery showing. It has a flak now, but it might still be worth a quick raid, just to disrupt the AI. Otherwise, it will be a couple more turns before significant numbers of marines can reach Wake or Kwaj.

I’m not really sure what the plan for the Philipines is. We have troops on most (but not all) tiles. I wasn’t sure if we’re trying to blockade the coast (although, with marines commonly available, it wouldn’t really be an exploit here). If so, there were some tiles open. I shifted a few around to at least cover the hills, but next commander can review. I also sent a fighter over for Air superiority, although I haven’t seen an aircraft my whole tour.

I'd still like to discuss mobilization, but maybe not as urgent yet. The factory at Honolulu can be rushed easily, and mobilize next turn. But we have several cities at 60spt, which is a marine every other turn, and mobilization won't be enough to reduce the time to build much. If/when we are ready to swap to tanks and other stuff, it may be more of an issue.

I agree with the mobilizing. An historical reenactment.
