Asking sorry everybody for first because this question has been probably made already, I would like to know how I can fix this:

I installed everything, including PTW, the 1.14f patch, the gamespy client and so on and ,when I enter the multiplayer area,
I can see the games, I choose one, I press Ready, and then the program starts counting backwards from 120 secs to zero, saying that I cannot connect because I'm behind a firewall or router.

Well, I'm on ADSL with a router, but I don't know what to do to fix it.

CAN ANYBODY HELP ME?

tks

Shivan

Hehe....I was just getting ready to post the same question.

I've installed everything, patched up to 1.14/1.29, join a game and get to the same point as shivan....it starts counting down from 120, then tells me to make sure, if I have a firewall, to check the readme.

Well, I don't havea firewall.

Could it be that I'm using AOL cable?

If this question has been asked a million times I'll settle for a link to where the solution is posted.

....anything.

so we'll wait for a savior...

I'm reinstalling everything on my portable PC so that I can try to connect via dialup.

I'll let you know

shivan, do you have AOL? If so, that is your problem.....it's mine, anyway.

Good luck.

no, I don't have AOL, I work for a telecommunication company and my ADSL connection is "homemade"

Comrades,

I am no tech but I may be able to shed some light on your problems. There are two possible issues here.

1.) Many internet games have a specific port they use to connect to the gamining community with. It is my understanding that your router may need to be "instructed" to open and use port "x" for that application. In IL2 Sturmovik the port is 2100. I do not know what it is for CIV III. Consult your router manufacturer and they should be able to help you with this.

2.) Your firewall and ISP often use dynamic IP addresses. You have an internal IP which is static I believe and never changes. So In reality you have two IP addresses. The dynamic one is the one that changes each time you log on and is supposedly more secure. This might be the problem. You may need to play CIV III PTW on your internal as opposed to your external IP address. In IL2 Sturmovik I could never connect into an actual game until I changed which IP address I was using. IL2 made it easy by actually listing the two I could choose from. It was process of elimination from that point and I had success. I suspect that your issues are related to the two situations described above. At least it gives you something to go on.

Your Comrade,

Vladimir

Hi, I was getting the same problems. Closing down the firewall should resolve it. I could never play with firewall activated, is fine now that I close it. Also, you can play PTW on an internal IP. I have 2 machines in my home network at the moment, and I never play with the one direcly connected to the net, only the internal one.

I haven't played PTW with the firewall up yet, but I think it's possible. Checkout the readme file for PTW, that explains all the ports that are used. I haven't got round to trying it yet.

VoodooAce, are you using Windows XP? That has a built-in firewall that you might be using without realizing it. If so, you need to go into the properties for the connectoid you're using to connect to the net and switch it off.

Hope it helps. :)
Andrew.

thank you all, guys.
Vlad, I cannot actually change my IP to mask it as it was "opposed" to my network address.

My topology is:
PC (let's say IP address 1.2.3.4), an hub (passive), a router, the net

The router may be the problem. It obviously has the ethernet address, that my PC sees as the default gateway, let's say 1.2.3.1), and on the other side the ATM connection, with a different IP address, let's say 1.2.5.1 router side and 1.2.5.2 network side.
The PTW client, or better the Gamespy client, sees the PC presenting itself with 1.2.5.1 and the packets coming from 1.2.3.4 and this is enough to mess the whole thing.

I may configure the router with PAT protocol so that everything coming out of my network has the 1.2.5.1 IP address as sender.

Anybody has clues on it?

Maybe you can find some help here

If not, let me know what type/model router you have and I'll try to figure out the best way to set it up.

Closing this thread I finally can tell I fixed my problem finding out that the NAT protocol was configured on my router.
A "colleague" did this without telling it to me.
That was the problem.

Thank you everybody!! :)
