Whenever in one of my games I get a ship of the line, my next line of business is capturing a Royal Sloop to serve as the second ship in my fleet. A SoTL is able to take out just about anything... Except those annoying peace offers and smugglers. I use the SoTL for most of the heavy lifting, but when I feel the need to get a war canoe, keep countries at war or take otu a smuggler carrying thousand of gold, I just switch to the Royal Sloop. Using both only takes away twelve crew. Eventually as I am able to get in the upper 400's in crew without mutiny (due to my 500,000 odd gold ) I also get a one or two English Large Frigates, courtesy of a pirate hunter so that if my SoTL takes 30 or so shots, I can just switch out and continue plundering, which is especially useful for plundering the treasure ships :)

So really, there needs to be no debate about whats best, because you can use any together.

Also what ship/s do you guys like using through your games regardless?

That's pretty much how I play it - except I usually use a Large Frigate and a Royal Sloop, less treasure and crew. Maybe I should take the time and trouble to get the SoTL.

The Best ^ Guide ^ For getting a Sotl ^. You should get one at age 20, as well as being an English and possibly Spanish Duke and really cranking up the wealth rating.

8 guns can make a HUGE DIFFERENCE, and the max crew capacity is 450... It be beastie. Also the fastest ship in the sea in the right wind conditions, about 1/3 of the time.

One question, why do people love the war cannoe?

Because they don't play the game the way it was meant to be played and don't like land battles OR shipping Cargo... Just dodge all cannons, and swordfight the enemy into submission = Uber cheap

I take your point.

Thanks for getting me to re-read the Ship Of the Line strategy article. Probably the most well written strategy article I've ever read.

Played Pirates! again, I think you're on to something with that observation

. I tried for the Ship of The Line , but couldn't bring myself to dump any luxuries or spices, kept going into port to sell them. Had a fleet of Large Frigates for a while , the seas were swollen with them...

However, The only SoTL I saw was up by Eustatius, and by the time I ran it down , it was at the harbor mouth , and slipped inside as the attack button lit and I pressed it.

By then I was 24 and ready to pursue Montalban before I got too old to face him.

The last game went well enough, although I regreted my age and ill health towards the end.

Started another game, followed the strategy, but set off for adventure with a couple of Large Frigates while I was still 21.

Ahoy mateys, me preferences be two sloops, or a Royal Sloop and Pinnace, they be fast an' nimble, an' require few crew ta share yer gold with. Harr harr.
