Then your PC has major problems. If something is causing crashes, its generally a problem with the PC, specifically some sort of hardware conflict with the software/
Something I've been noticing recently is that older games seem to perform progressively worse as computers get newer. Civ I is one of the worst--I played that one all the way from its initial release up until a year ago, and that one has been steadily getting slower and crankier as I upgrade my hardware.

Could be, but Starcraft doesn't yet qualify as 'old' in my book, because I think it's still supported by Blizzard. They still give tech support if you have problems with it in Vista.
Granted, DOS, 16-bit Windows and some specific Win98 can give problems, but there isn't an old game that I can't get to work on XP (my Vista machines arrives today so I'll give a check in the coming weeks). Though I use DOSBox for the Dos games obviously.
Back on topic: Try the Seven Kingdoms serie if you can find it or when it's released.
