RTS game, style Civ

Your standard RTS games generaly are not like Civ at all. Many are a spammy clickfest (a bad kind of spammy clickfest).

Then just dont buy the ones that are spammy click-fests.......

What do you mean by "holden edition"?

As if you want to get both M2 and Kingdoms together that may make you wait for some time.

Rome and it's expansion can be found in a gold edition already.

But there's no one box with Rome, Barbarian Invasion, and Alexander.

I'd also say that the Paradox games are RTS only in a technical sense (I've only played HOI 2). They play so slowly that they may as well be turn-based, as there is basically no time presure on any descision you will make over the course of the game, especially since you can pause and give orders at any time.

I've never played Rise of Nations or Rise of Legends but I gather that they play almost like a cross between Civ and Age of Empires (the lead designer on the Rise Of.. games was actually the lead designer on Civ 2, Brian Reynolds.)

:)

And Big Huge Games was recently purchased by THQ (yes, I know this is off-topic).

If it has nothing to do with the topic, then why is it here?

(Never heard of Big Huge Games)

I have the RTW: Anthology box which contains RTW, Barbarian Invasion and Alexander. :p

Very few RTS games are going to resemble the Civ games. The hitch is that TBS usually emphasizes economy, research, and diplomacy--at the expense, obviously, of action. RTS, on the other hand, almost always has greatly simplified economy, and puts most of the emphasis on breaking heads.

I don't think I've ever seen a game that puts a lot of detail into both at the same time. Having a full-bore real-time war in the style of Supreme Commander while doing city management and research at the same time, is probably too much stuff for one human being to handle......

Now, on the other front, I still haven't received my final Christmas gift, World in Conflict. However, I've considered getting these instead.

Rome: Total War
Medieval II: Total War

Errr...., I'm getting a new computer sometime in (at maximum) a few months.

Then world in conflict, if you can handle it.

A bit old (1997 & 1999 respectively) but Seven Kingdoms and Seven Kingdoms 2: The Frythan Wars are nice RTS'ses with some nice Civ touches. But getting it would probably end up in a bargainhunt...

Oh, and if you think Gamespot is a credible source:

An hour with Seven Kingdoms answered the question. Designer Chan may be the next Sid Meier (Civilization, Gettysburg!) or Will Wright (SimCity), with ideas that make a nod to the past, yet have their own quirky individuality. Seven Kingdoms delivers on the promises made by Age of Empires by creating a real-time meld of Civilization-type empire building and WarCraft-style combat, with enough unique twists to make it more than a mere hybrid. It is one of the best strategy games of the year and deserves more attention than it is liable to get.

Edit: Just found out that there is a third part in the series: Seven Kingdoms Conquest. It's not out yet, but if it is as good as 1 and 2 were in their time, it probably is a must-get!

I'm not getting any old games. That's a lesson I've learned ever since installing StarCraft crashed my computer.

That's bad luck to you then. I've got games lying around from the early 90's til now and they all work flawlessly. But seriously, if mere installing software crashes your pc, then you might want to check your pc for faults...

Europa Universalis II does a good job of focusing on the diplomacy and management(economic or otherwise) parts of the game and its an RTS. Also one of the first games I have seen that do not reward constant aggression and military action. Well planned wars will net you great riches, but everything else just drains your economy(big).

Okay fine, I lied. But StarCraft crashed my computer after a few days of being installed.
