Which do you prefer? I find RTS unplayably boring... from Hearts of Iron to Rome TW, I just cannot get into the genre...

Turn based is slightly better than real time since I like to plan out moves without missing necessary actions.

I thought this thread would be about television stations. :(

Anyhoo, I like turn based better, though I enjoyed the way X-Com had real time at the strategic level then turn based for the tactical deployment.

Depends what mood I'm in. Playing Age of Empires II with my flatmates was the highlight of my second year at uni. Well not really but it was fun.

Both. A combination of both Turn based and real time is also quite preferable. (Hint total war series).

Sometimes the complexity of turn based games make them boring , while most RTS are too similar. As turn based games have a strategic advantage of planing your moves ahead i consider a less complex than Civ turn based game but still allowing for quite of strategy to be the preferable for me. And here is where the advance war series appears.

Reason enough to own a DS.

Age of empire 2 is still among the best IMO.

Age of 3 isn't as exciting as Age Of 2:Conquerors.
I've played Age Of 2 for 4-5 years,but finally i got bored.

Turn-based. I dislike the way that real-time games end up making your troops very stupid whilst your computer opponent micromanages his to make them act intelligently. I might enjoy a real-time game if I could pause it to give orders, but that would then take a long time.
Turn-based strategy games give a nice balance between endless successive pausing and an inability to control units at the right time.

How about real time games that are concentrated on battle (IMO city management should be turn based always) however you can pause it when needed ?

Personally i have been charmed by the total war recipe.

I'm big into civ, but not gaming in general, I'm looked for years for something other than Civ, but have been disappointed any time I get anythign esle.... I've got high hopes for Spore, but TBH, I cannt wait for Civ5 more than anyhting. Colonization should be class though

the battles in Turn based games aren't nice.
You can't hit enemy with large numbers(like a real war)Trecbulets and catapults don't work as a beneficial weapon.and also you can't control your army as a commander, take your army back, trap enemy in a zone.
Turn based games don't have action.

When a RTS defaults to either:

- Select all, attack that unit, select all, attack that unit, etc etc.
or
- Sit back and watch the AI take control.

They are simply crap.

I did like Hearts of Iron, but I played it like I'd play a TBS. The Total War series are not pure RTS either, since only the battles are RTS. And those battles are more entertaining battles than 99% of pure RTSes. There actually was tactics involved. A bit.

I love TBS over RTS because I don't like to be rushed.

The question usually is: do you want pretty pictures or do you want strategy and tactics.

No you don't have to select every enemy unit. You can give your armies numbers like 1st Army,2nd Army.It will be useful for you to control your armies on enemy zone easily.

I prefer Grand Strategy irregardless of RTS or TBS.
