Depends what mood I'm in. Playing Age of Empires II with my flatmates was the highlight of my second year at uni. Well not really but it was fun.
Turn-based. I dislike the way that real-time games end up making your troops very stupid whilst your computer opponent micromanages his to make them act intelligently. I might enjoy a real-time game if I could pause it to give orders, but that would then take a long time.
Turn-based strategy games give a nice balance between endless successive pausing and an inability to control units at the right time.
No you don't have to select every enemy unit. You can give your armies numbers like 1st Army,2nd Army.It will be useful for you to control your armies on enemy zone easily. When a RTS defaults to either:
- Select all, attack that unit, select all, attack that unit, etc etc.
or
- Sit back and watch the AI take control.
They are simply crap.
I did like Hearts of Iron, but I played it like I'd play a TBS. The Total War series are not pure RTS either, since only the battles are RTS. And those battles are more entertaining battles than 99% of pure RTSes. There actually was tactics involved. A bit.
I love TBS over RTS because I don't like to be rushed.
The question usually is: do you want pretty pictures or do you want strategy and tactics.
