Magnus brought up a good point in the post below. The AI seems to become friendlier to you when your on top of the power graph. Why is that???

?!?!?!?

It's always been my experience that, the more powerful my civ gets, the colder relations with other civs become.

Actually, shotdown08, I meant the opposite - they PRETEND to like you so they can sneak attack you... (and sneak attacks are generally the only time the AI is effective in battle).

Yeah, the AI only likes you if you are insignificant.

Yes. I have noticed that when you are on top, they all band up to try and knock you off.

A telling sign was the way you get treated in a OCC game. I had excellent relations with everyone, as opposed to when I have 80 cities and a strong wide reaching empire

I can only play on the "Warlord" level, hence the scrawny and quite comical little man to the left. Anyway, I've always found that if you build the Great Wall and the United Nations, you really don't have to worry about AI relations. Thus, leaving you more time to nurture your growing nation. It's saved my arse on countless occasions.

I build these too--but then the only way the AI CAN attack you (unless you do first) is by sneak-attack (even a sneak-attack by nuke!). So be prepared for it!

I usually keep a large reserve of tanks and howies somewhere in my interior but connected by rail to all my frontiers. That way they're safe from initial attack, and ready to rock 'n roll once it's my turn....
