Does Civ4 Beyond the Sword work alright with 12Gb of RAM, has anyone had any problems running it with large amounts of RAM? I'm thinking of upgrading my PC.

My comp runs Civ 4 fine with 8gb of RAM. Typically older programs cap the amount of RAM used and if you want to use more you need to run a patcher program that modifies the .exe. I use one for modding Oblivion. By default Oblivion only runs 1.9 gb RAM but the patcher allows it to run more to handle higher textures and other resource heavy mods. I can't imagine you having any issues running Civ 4 in a powerful comp. OS problems may pop up but you can just run in compatibility mode by right clicking the .exe and going to properties then compatibility tab and adjusting accordingly.

CIV uses a max of 4 GB memory. Having more memory won't affect CIV, neither negatively nor positively. The extra GBs will be used by your OS and/or other applications or sit idle until you do run something else concurrently. I have 8 GB. When I look at memory usage, CIV is only using 4 GB.

Agreed re the 4Gb limit - it was built with an older Core Architecture in mind, and will not utilise above 4Gb. Having said that you *might* gain some speed by using RAMDiscs ..... but don't hold your breath, its a lot of messing around for minimal gain.

Only try the latter if you are buying 12Gb for other reasons, don't buy that 12Gb just for Civ 4 - RAMDiscs or no RAMdiscs.
