Russia - the most overnerfed civ in the game! Should it be improved?

Well, that's because I like it now just the way it is, even with Civs that have Cavalry as a unique unit. If Cavalry are so bad, what about Spain with the Conquistador?

No no. It's just fine as is. If anything, perhaps Cossacks ought to get their bonuses against Gunpowder units, to offset the fact that Cavalry now has a smaller role in the game. That would improve Cossacks to the point where they'd be truly very strong, but not Cavalry in general.

I think conquistadors are a great unit. Afterall you can beeline them since you don't need some other useless tech (rifling :)) to get them.

Yeah a bonus against gunpowder and melee or just gunpowder units would be an acceptable solution. I'm more concerned about Russia so I don't mind if only cossacks are improved.

The reason your Rifleman armies do well is the same reason Cavalry only armies also do very well - the AI sucks at countering it.
Just curious... how would you counter a Rifleman army? Cannons? (Leaving aside the point that Cannons counter every army, even Cavalry as long as the Cannons are attacking.)

Also, I don't think the AI sucks at countering Cavalry, before they get Rifling, sure, but afterwards the AI does pretty well because Riflemen become its staple unit.

Cavalry was used in WW1 and even in WW2, although obviously not as extensively and for different purposes.

I think that is shown by the few out-of-date units you'd have hanging around. cavalry charging trenches was suicidal, and the Polish Cavlry were very quickly wiped out in 1949.

The normal justifications were give- charge the flanks, more mobile, etc., but they are simply too big a target to fight modern infantery.

Wodan:

On the attack, only Cannons will do. Yes, I know they counter every unit.

On the defense, I would lure the enemy into my cultural borders and whittle down his Riflemen with Grenadiers.
