I bet someone else, pages back, started one of these, and this one'll be closed.... but anyways:

whats the sales tax in your area? in Canada, there's a 7% nation-wide sales tax. each province has its own provincial tax. 8 provinces set thier taxes independantley, Alberta has no provincial sales taxes cause the oil there makes them rich, and PEI stacks its taxes so its more in the end :) and guess where I love.

the tax here is 7and10 %'s stacked. so it works out to 17.7% sales tax.

17.7%

what about you?

Newfoundland had the GST = 7% and the PST = 12%. Which was also stacked to give 19.9%.

However....they got permission a few years back to change the provincial tax so instead of 7% GST + 12% PST = 20% TAX, we got a flat 15% HST (Harominized Sales Tax)

so, the province looses out on 36% of its money? where does it get it back from?

 You guys pay high taxes.

In Florida it is 6%, and no national sales taxes. Goods & services considered 'vital goods' (like milk, bread), are untaxed. Of course most goods & services which are considered exclusively for tourists are taxed at a higher rate :D

And it is against the state constitution to levy a state income tax.

6.5% sales tax...of course, the last time I heard, Minnesota was #2 in terms of highest state taxes in the country...

I'm not sure if that's proportional to the parity or not (x cents on the dollar), but if someone knows, put it up here. I'd like to see it.

I don't know about here in Baltimore, but the Seattle area has the highest sales tax in the country. Bellevue (a suburb) has 8.8% sales tax. The trade off is that Washington State doesn't have any additional (on top of the national, for you foreigners) income tax like many other states.

7% tax. Eat that all you non-Albertans, you make me sick with your delapidity and poorness.

lol. So is the trade-off that you have to live in Calgary?

I think B.C.'s sales tax is at 8% now, for a total of 15%. Damn Liberals, they were supposed to be an improvement over the NDP!

I must say I was happy when I moved here from B.C. and its 7% GST and 7% PST for a total of 14% tax.

Here in Utah it's 6.6% flat. The trade off is that food and clothing is taxed too, which I think is stupid. Back when I lived in Pennsylvania, we had a 7% sales tax but any clothing and any food was exempted.

well we can argue over how the BC NDP took in little money, and spent alot, so the liberals would purposley look bad when they took office another time *cough*member of NDP*cough*but its true*cough*

to clear up a bit, PEI's tax, is compounded. so its actually 17.7%

also, there is no GST {federal} or PST {provincial/state} on essencial things, like bread, and for a while, even chip dip, go figure? on PEI, there is no PST on clothing. its a ploy to get people to buy clothing on PEI, as our neighbours have a 15% tax rate.
also, factoids:
PEI is the only market in north america where you cannot sell pop in cans! must be in glass bottles!
also:
PEI is the only state/province in the WHOLE WORLD where Pepsi outsells coke! yeay!!! I love my Pepsi!

Here in Taxachusetts we haver a 5% sales tax on everything except food and clothing.

Neighboring New Hampshire, by contrast has ZERO sales and ZERO income tax --- of course their PROPERTY taxes are outrageous.

Marion, Illinois. In my memory, I've seen the sales tax go from 6% to 6.25% to 6.5% to 7% to 7.25% now. That's probably a little over a decade.

I also remember 28 cent stamps, and $2.50 for an evening movie... damn inflation.

I think I'd prefer it that way... much more progressive than sales taxes.

Progressive? what are you, nutz?

taxes should be:
low property taxes that go to municipalities
10% sales taxes that go to the province/state
and income tax collected by the federal government

the income tax should be step-sloped

whats a step slope? an invention of mine. here.

lets say you make 99,999 units of currency in one taxation time unit {hey, its just easier to calculate this way} 99,999 or less units gets 10% tax, while 100,000 or more gets 11% tax. so, right now you pay the gov 9,999.90 units of currency. meaning, you get to keep 89,999.10 units. if, per chance, you make one cent unit more, then you now must pay 11,000 units, so you now keep 89,000.00
 thats outragous! make less money for making more! what ever will we do!
easy
slope it. for each 2 cents more you make, the gov can only take away 1. so:
make=keep
99,999=89,999.10
100,000=89,999.60
and so on...
the 1 to 2 cent ratio may not stay as it, but there should be a slope that ensures that by making more, you dont, actually, make less.
beyond that, the tax rates should be:
6.666(repeating forever)% property tax
10% sales tax
50% income tax
for a total of 66.66666...% tax rate {2/3rds}
the money should then be used to redistribute the wealth. to pay for things like national health care, and to build roads that dont need toals to run. as well as provide refunds to the people that paid the taxes in the first place, when possible.
also, I do not belive in a flat tax. instead, I belive that a national servy should be taken, and the 'living wage' came to. this would be the minimum ammount of money needed to survive. the government would then tax businesses, highley, and pay everyone in the nation this wage, if they work. businesses can then increase upon that, as it would become a "minimum wage". I also belive the government should buy you: an apartment, in special government houses. this would be a very small apartment, about 20X20 feet probably, 1 room, which would act as bathroom, bedroom, livingroom, and kitchern. thay should also buy you nessacary food items. like bread, etc. not too much though. and they should buy you a car. a real crappy 2 seater car that dosent go faster then 100kph. this should all be taken away from the living wage. so essencially, if you want to live in a norma house, with a normal car, and normal food, you gotta work hard for it! but if you wanna laze around all day, go right ahead. this would mean, though, that a business wouldent need to pay their workers anything! though, people would rather work for a dollar a day then nothing! (remember, thier living wage is already paid for by the government!)
this is a very socailist system, but hey, I am a left-liberal maniac :D

Ahhh Pelly, you are a born politician, you like to use lots of words and complicated formulas that in the end really don't accomplish much, but look good. The US tax code is some 3,000 pages long! Here is my simple proposal to eliminate all those useless tax accountant's jobs:

If you make up to $20,000 - you pay no income tax, period

If you make more than $20,000 then you pay the government 1/3 of your income that exceeds that amount.

Thus:

income of $30,000 pays $3,333 (or 11%)
income of $40,000 pays $6,666 (or 17%)
income of $50,000 pays $10,000 (or 20%)
income of $60,000 pays $13,333 (or 22 %)
income of $70,000 pays $16,666 (or 24%)
income of $80,000 pays $20,000 (or 25%)

this way you have a flat tax that looks graduated and as you make more money you APPROACH 33% but only those making crazy money (over $250,000) will actually see that percentage. No more filing jointly, no more deductions of any kind, if you make it, you pay it. The poor will pay nothing, the middle class gets a serious break, and the wealthy finally pay their rightful share.

Yes, it is. Which is one of the reasons it is a stupid idea: I'm opposed on every level to penalizing someone for making money. And your idea of a utopia has been tried and failed miserably ... of course, like all neo-Communists you'll point out that all previous Communists didn't do it right and if you just had the chance you would fix all their mistakes and do it perfectly this time...

As far as taxation goes, I like property taxes, and progressive income taxes. They charge the wealthy more without it seeming like a witchhunt to equalize their worth with the rest of society.
Of course, my idea of reasonable tax caps at 33% regardless of how much you make.

I was more concerned with the fact that sales taxes are, in my opinion, the worst form of taxation because they penalize consumerism, which is what a capitalist economy is based upon.

In Britain the VAT (Value Added Tax) is 17.5% but I think the government were trying to raise it. This doesn't cover items such as medical supplies and food.
