Same continent sea invasions?

I have seen that the AI's considerably better at waging sea invasions from continent to continent with Better AI, but I haven't really seen if the AI makes use of transport ships to attack civilizations on the same continent if traveling by sea happens to be faster than by land. Or if the land is obstructed completely by a middle civ and water transport is the only way to attack. Does the AI do this?

No, the AI will not. This is a serious problem in some maps (like ones that use ocean tiles to represent "thick rivers").

This problem looks quite tricky. Even getting the AI to move units by boat when it is faster than by land (which is a strictly simpler problem) is tricky.

Based on speed, no ... that's not taken into account yet. If the land passage is blocked, the AI will now be able to send multiple waves (before it sent only one).

As Yakk said, it is tricky though ... what I would really need to get that working are a couple of good test maps. Well, that and several quiet days for coding.

Anyone have any good maps where the water route would be clearly better? Either BBAI saves or world builder I think would work too.

I have this map: http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=6813

The lower middle area is pretty close together and it would be a long walk to go around. Also it has areas with peaks blocking them so they're only accessible by sea. I think it could confuse the AI enough to test new behaviour, but it's just a map without civs already on it.

I...have actually been hit from the sea during a war with an AI on the same continent with a minor (4-5 unit) force. It didn't have any other cities on any other continent, so I don't have a good explanation as to why it occurred. Maybe it had decided to go attack a barb city or something and then declared on me and then decided to use its barb city stack on me? Dunno but it did it SOMEHOW.

Actually I was asking specifically because I'm working on a scenario that involves traveling on "thick rivers"
