I just had a thought and am wondering if anyone has tried it yet. Save the game a turn or 2 before transition, start the new age, play a bit. then reload the old save and make a different transition?
Sounds entirely plausible , I'm wondering if it would mess up your progress or unlocks.

I'm thinking now that it would be fun to finish a game and then go back to exploration and see how it plays out going another path.

Once when I had both the military and economic golden ages available, I saved on turn 1 before doing anything, and then played two different games. I named my saves so I'd know which was and it was fun to see how it went! It didn't seem to impact my unlocks at all.

I reload my save before transition all the time, but mostly to get around confusion about when exactly the age ends (some games game me 1-2 turns at 100%, other don’t, got to place those towns!), or if I accidentally select a Civ I didn’t want.

Seems to give you the progress the first time and show you the progress next time but not double it.

I've yet to try it, I deleted a bunch of saves, making sure to keep the end and start of each age, I'm worried the patch might not play well with them.

I might try it for this play though I just started, my plan is Carthage> Walls to get Normans, Britain (I hope Ed made sure Normans unlock Britain)
Then I might reboot Carthage into someone else once I finish, just to see where an unforced playthrough finds me.

Good way to launch into the later ages trying different things without playing the entire prior age(s)
