When I save all your savegames in one directory, I always rename them using the same way, like:

Such consistency is nescessary ofcourse, so it would help me much if everyone would name them this way too. Furthermore, I'd rather have them zipped if possible, but that is even less important then this whole topic in the first place.

It's not a requirement; it would just be helpful.

I can't save with such long filenames though. What's the secret? If I type in

goodbye_mr_bond GOTM5 1000AD.sav

then it tells me there are too many characters. The best I've been able to do is like

bond1Kad.sav

I'd be happy to do it the long way, but I can't

That's correct. I believe that any version of Civ2 older than Gold Edition is Windows 3.11 based, which won't allow files with names longer than 8 characters. But I suppose you do have at least Windows 95, so you can just rename it.

Matrix!

I have finished GOTM V but there is a slight problem...

I'm on Mac...

I'm sure you can read my files since I was able to open the saved game I d/l ed but I don't have those "sav." files.

Even with Windows 95 there may still be a problem for some people if they send their files as a single compressed file.

For example, I normally use a zipper program (pkzip under Cygwin) which cannot cope with other than 8.3 filenames input or output. I can rename the output file, but that will not give you want you want Matrix, as when you unzip it it can only give you 3 save files in 8.3 format.

I could "tar" them up and gzip them instead, as I think WinZip can unpack gzipped tar files (if that's what you use). That would maintain long files names in your desired format, but though I have that facility, not everyone who is stuck with the 8.3 format zippers also has the option of cygwin or tar/gzip.

Or I can send them as three separate unzipped files, though you then have the possibility of three large attachments coming down your wire.

Providing you're using a modern WinZip, I'll send you a gzipped tar file in future, but I don't know what to suggest for anyone else.

Stormerne, it's no problem if you sent it to me unzipped. I've got cable internet, remember?

And I say again, this isn't nescessary. It just takes a lot of time to rename all the savegames, so it would be helpful. But if it's not possible or very tricky for you, then never mind.

Well, a normal winzip .zip file remebers long filenames, so it should work under Win95, right? And winzip's free, so anyone can get it and zip their long-file named games with it.

Yeah but it doesn't create the zipped file in the first place. It's not the reading that's the problem - that's at Matrix's end. It's the player's end that the problem would have come if you had "short filename" > "renamed to long file name" > "zip program" > "send to Matrix", when the zip program can't handle the long file names.

Anyone enough of this. Matrix is quite happy to receive three separate files as long as they're correctly named.

you are correct that MAC does not need the different file types but it does recognize them. So,rename your savs to xxxxxx.sav before sending them to pc players. Also for maps(xxx.mp) or scenarios(xxx.scn)

I'm about to play my first GOTM, but I don't know how to actually get the saved games to you (whoever I am supposed to send the saved games to, that is). How does this work?

Check out this link.
http://www.civfanatics.com/civ2gotmsubmit.shtml

Basically you want to e-mail Matrix your saved games along with the info on that page. The e-mail address is also on that page.

Hope that helps.
