Boy oh boy this jailbreaking world is not for the faint of heart. When I am done with all this I am going to have a pretty strong write up on the pleasures and pains of pursuing your childhood on modern devices.

Ok so more on topic I cant save playing civ 1 on iPad and I think it's due to dospads implementation of dosbox but I can't quite figure it out. Any suggestions?

It's probably easiest if you change directory to where civ is before launching. I'm assuming the iOS version of DOSBox can actually write files.

I am - when Civ asks to save, it's looking for C: which is a virtually mounted drive on DosPad - some of that is over my head...

Civilization asks for a drive letter but takes as input the current directory on the drive. As an example, if you changed to c:\civ and d:\games before loading civ, upon saving it would put the files in those specific directories rather than the drive root that it's representing.

However, the only way I've seen Civilization "fail" to create/load save files is when the user launches it inconsistently, e.g. sometimes from c:\ and sometimes from c:\civ. I'm still wondering if one can write files from within DOSBox. Try this from your mounted drive:

[pre]C:\>echo test > test.txt[/pre]

Then

[pre]C:\>dir[/pre]

You should see the test.txt file. If you run

[pre]C:\>type test.txt[/pre]

you should see the "text". If you're on the Z: drive something is wrong.

Write protected folder. Should have known. Should be easy enough to fix once I get home.

Edit the solve was sort of stupid convoluted but I got it to work. Going to work on a big write up this weekend for other idiots like me who can't figure this out.

Jailbreaking is complicated as all hell. I thought we left that crap in the last century. Man.

I also have had good luck with dospad + ipad + civ1. plays surprisingly well for such a weird technology mix.

thats all the magic of dospad remapping the various techs in the ipad into something that civ will recognize

I tried to install civ1 on my girlfriends apple laptop.
I loathe the fact that products of X don't fit on products of Y.
There are few things I want to die. I absolutely LOVE living in 2012, but some things make me yearn for the caveman days. This is one of them.

This will only get worse over time as technology continues to accelerate. You can't even "take a break" for a few months anymore.

If you can't launch games or game can't be saved, please check the permission of game files,
and make sure dospad has write permission to them ( set 7777) You can use iFile from Cydia to apply
permission change to a folder recursively.

Thanks a lot Lao, that did it for me, had problems saving before.

What a dream to play Civilization on iPad!

I have played Civ on a Windows Mobile 6.5
XBOX (first version) SNES version and DOS version

on iPad it really works great, have to flip it and use the keyboard that got diagonal keys :)
