Scenario making for beginners.

Thanks for your link, I'm surely check this marvelous scenario out! This period of time, is very interesting and according to your readme, it must be a great work!

Well, the last few days, I've found out a bit more about scenario editing in ToT and now I understand how much time this eats up. But it's fun anyway :)

I'm making a mod of Mr. Temba's Underdark Scenario for ToT and hopefully I'll finish it in the next 5 years or something. :D I had to restrict myself to do it in two steps. First step: just recreating it, new graphics (well recycled ones, because I only cut copy/paste and MS Paint...) finishing the labels, games, describe.txt - explain why I changed something, If I did so - and after that searching for the names of all the people whom I've stolen unit-graphics from, to properly credit them. I suppose this will take it's time but I hope to finish it in 2-3 months so ToT-Players can lay their hands on one of the best FW-Scenarios I've seen out there. This one would NOT be something new, only it has more text and newer graphics.

After that, I want to do a mod for it. One thing which is really sad, is that you CANNOT (or at least I did not found out how) use the advanced unit rules of ToT for a converted scenario. This means, If I want to have - lets say - invisible units, I have to start a new game, which means, I have to re-do every step Mr. Temba once did (putting cities etc). This would take supposingly 1/2 of the time, it costs to write a mod instead, so I think it's more sensible to do a mod.

This of course should be done right. Not only do I have to keep up the spirit Mr. Temba put in his scenario (Rebellions instead of Pollution etc. - it's just great how creative he was!) - but also I want to fine tune things he could not do with the FW engine. This means no more "no/no" techs only needed to ensure that not every tribe has the same units. In ToT you can define who can build what. Furthermore I want to put even more thought in the use of advances. I've found a list, which advance does what and this could be helpful to generate side effects. And then, why not let the Surface People go back to the surface later in the game? the ToT-Multi-Maps are there to use! ;)

This will be a huge task, it's like "creating a fantasy game out of the midgard-scenario". And I hope Mr. Temba won't disagree if he finds out ;) (his email and homepage doesn't work anymore so i cannot ask him).

One question: Is it okey to use and alter the original ToT-graphics or will they sue me to death, if I put it on the net...? And what about graphics and ideas others made? Is it okey to use them, if I make a credits.txt?

No, use what ever you can. If you use someone else's art leave their initials on the unit. If you modify it substantially, add your own as well. If you modify it more or less completely, just put yours on.

Have you checked out the Cradle of Civilization site? http://coc.apolyton.net/ It has excellent tips for ToT advanced rules editing and events. It also has an excellent utilities section with programs you can use to enhance your scenario.

One of these is CivConverter, which converts FW and MGE scenarios into ToT format. It will save you a whole bunch of time on your project. Just one thing, though. Since ToT doesn't support objective city values greater than one, you must reset any objective values to one before converting.

i really don't understand why lots of people says ToT is "more complex to modify" !!! Just because there's no the "ingame" editors ????

ToT = MGE + New options !
ToT is even easiest than MGE... for MGE u have to pay attention to units slots with the sharing attack sounds !

If ToT have less and less scenarios than MGE that's because less and less people bought because they soon have Civ2 / CiC / FW / or MGE and because ToT have no mapeditor and was not Civ2 scenario compatible !

Civconverter from Angelo Scotto is really easy to use to convert Civ2 "single" (with no multi events or *.bat or worst... *.exe) scenarios

how do u make techs for certain civs that cant be discovered and cant be stolen?

how can u make units that only appear in teh game once (ie. once they're killed theyre dead forever)?

The idea of this thread was that it was a SELF-help resource for beginners. The answers to your questions are in some of the FAQ's and guides which are linked in the first few posts of this thread. I suggest downloading Leon Marrick's paper "Advanced Scenario Design" from CivFanatics and looking through the tips section of the Scenario League site. Good luck!

-"how do u make techs for certain civs that cant be discovered and cant be stolen?"

With New rules option "Leaders2" and "Civilize2"
BUT there's a bug.. u must edit these new rules option correctly before u start to edit "in game" your scenario... (change "original" Rules.txt by your scenario rules.txt with all changes done in leaders2/civilize2 when u decide to start the creation of the *.scn)

if u forgot to do this or use a converted scenario from MGE, there's a second solution... use events and the option "Enabletechnology"... then restart *.scn and save as *.scn

The Craddle of Civilization ( http://coc.apolyton.net/ ) guides section read "using civilize2 - Leaders2". I'm french, i'm not good in english but i all understand ! :D

-"how can u make units that only appear in teh game once"

via Events like in MGE ! option "Createunit". Your unit should of course cant be build by civs, via unit's tech prerequesite/obsolet tech (MGE/ToT) or easiest via Advanced Units option (ToT).

Im am making a scenario-modpack that was so you can use it on the scenario and for single player and i wanted to make it so if for example "you researched american tech then you couldn't research soviet tech" also any one know how you can do that If you can?

Hallo everybody.
I have this question.
Does anybody know a good freeware GIF editor, to edit CIV graphic files (units, cities, icons etc) which allow to show all the 256 colors of the palette and not the TRUE-COLOR palette like PsP for example.
Do you understand what i mean?
Thanks in advance.

Nice program, and nice place with good stuff.
But it's not what i'm looking for.

I'm looking for a program to edit a GIF file (i.e. units.gif) and edit its 256 color palette.
Something like an icon editor, where i can zoom the image, show a grid and pick-up colors from a 256 color palette, and eventually change it.

All paint programs i found work with a true-color palette and it can be a problem with the last 3 colors used for transaparency by CIV II, you know.

hmmm...

i always use Paint Shop Pro Shareware and when i loaded a Civ2 gif file i always have the 256 color Civ2 palette when i clic to the colors set !!

Please, teach me the way.
I open units.gif with PSP.
I focus over the settler icon and zoom it to 8:1

At this point how can i pick-up a color from the existing palette to change something?
If i try to pick a color from the PSP color selector at the top-right corner, there are 16M. If i edit color palette from menu option (shift-p) i cannot select a color

I feel so stupid!

i just clic on the 2 color box (color & background color) on the right under the 16M palette and all the 256 colors of the gif are here, i choose the one i want the i exit...

Download PSP7 shareware at jasc.com... I assume you have version 6 or earlier. In PSP7 the "color-table" changes to the palette.
In earlier versions it didn't, so you'd either need to use the color dropper and select the color from the image itself, or click on the foreground/background color (below the color-table on the right), that will bring up the palette and allow you to select the right color.
