Scenario - no diplomacy screens?

Just installed Gods and Kings on Friday, directly from Steam. So assuming it's patched up to current version.

Problem - when playing any of the pre-loaded Scenarios, none of the other leaders' screens come up in diplomacy.

I just get a red and white checked screen.

Diplomacy works fine otherwise.

Turn the graphical settings (especially for the leaders) down.
Because the red and white checkerboard is a clear indicator for too much load on the graphics card.
